Somewhere on the Internet, I stumbled into this very nice language map containing translations of the phrase "There are no stupid questions" in lots of languages in Europe and neighboring areas.

(I apologize for the overabundance of jpeg.)

My reaction to seeing this was just... As an absolute language nerd I got the equivalent of a... It's hard to describe. I felt an instant rush of excitement and happiness upon seeing all these translations, especially when I saw all these smaller languages that I've had lots of interest in, such as Ossetian, Chechen, Skolt Sami and other Sami and Uralic languages, and what I believe is Crimean Tatar. Also rather interesting about the map is it has translations for all 6 modern Celtic languages. In this map I am able to see various oddities about what makes beautiful. For example, look at Skolt Sami's translation in northernmost Finland: "Jeäʹla tuʹhmm kõõččmõõžž." This is a mouthful! I can hardly fathom pronouncing this (particularly considering I don't know how the symbol "ʹ" works exactly) but it fascinates me to think that there are languages that are written in such unique ways.

Now some questions. What's your favorite language(s) that you see on here (if you can recognize it)? (If you cannot identify it, you can either write the translation or its approximate location on the map) What are other language(s) can you recognize?

Edit: Here's the page I found this map in. However, given that the map doesn't have the page's watermark, and the image's jpeg level, I don't think it's their OC, so I really have no idea where this image came from. Guess it's just one of those hidden gems on the Internet.

The little light green box just under Italy is most likely Maltese. Beautiful language, I hope Duolingo offers it one day. My favorites from this map are Welsh, Arabic and Greek. I think both Arabic and Greek are obvious but Welsh is the one that says "Nid oes cwestiynau twp." Armenian (the pink box under what I assume is Azerbaijani) also looks beautiful to me.

Ahh, it's overwhelmingly awesome! Thanks for sharing, have some lingots.

See here for how it works.

The Irish translation in the image, “Níl aon *ceist amaideach”, should have been “Níl aon cheist amaideach”.

I love that. For that I present you with this, which I find quite comical.

Good post, and (sadly) I only know German. I see it, with this: "Es gibt keine dummen fragen." with translates to "There are no dumb questions."

Fries “Der binne gjin dom fragen " Fries is the official language next to Dutch in a part of the Netherlands.

Dutch “Er zijn geen domme vragen”.

Both translate to "There are no dumb questions."

I actually understood that. Also is Fries a Frisian language?

3/13/2019, 2:58:00 AM

https://www.duolingo.com/GoatScreaming

To my understanding yes. I have been trying to find information as to where I can learn the Frisian language but to my knowledge no one teaches it. My ancestors were from Friesland that is my reasoning for wanting to learn it. Because of the amount bullsh*t on the internet it's hard to tell what's true but I was reading an article that there are only half a million people that can speak Fries and the group that was writing the article was trying to record the language. Base on their research it is closest to English however because the Fries lost a war against the Dutch they inherited some terminology that is Dutch. As I said though I'm not sure all the information I've collected is correct so if I'm wrong or if someone knows more than I do please educate me!

I think it's great how many Nordic languages are on there – but all of it is great. I understand the rush it gave you. Nerds always understand ;)

Russian ♥

Hey Linda, found you. I don't know whether you use the BBC sounds site https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds but if you haven't used it yet it's free and simple to set up an account and sign in.

The reason I mention it is because of a radio 4 "Book of the Week" I came across called "The Land Where Lemons Grow". It comes in five parts, and it is a very interesting Italian travelogue. I think you would enjoy it. I'm enjoying it. You can pop the title into the search box in the top right of the BBC screen, then remember to click the magnifying-glass-shaped search button. Enjoy :)

I agree with Linda, the post was excellent, but please delete that part it is unnecessary and should not be used according to the guidelines https://www.duolingo.com/guidelines.

I believe this segment of the guidelines explains it clearly. Write inflammatory comments Hateful, obscene and off-topic comments don’t contribute to learning. Cursing doesn’t either (let people discover those words in the wild). Leave them out of the language discussions.

If you are objecting to the word 'damn' used as an interjection, the fact that it actually appears in DL sentences strongly suggests that it was not intended to be covered by the guidelines you have quoted.
What DL does surely trumps what DL says when the two can be interpreted to be at variance.
