Weekly Norwegian #19: Railway Trouble and Tips & Notes PSA

Riktig god onsdag!

If you follow Norwegian news, you might already be aware of the national railway company's less-than-popular name change. It's going from NSB (Norges Statsbaner/Norwegian State Railways) to Vy.

Old NSB ad with Star Wars references

Klar Tale has covered the case, so here's some reading practice for you:

As well as some light entertainment.

Tips & Notes PSA

Over the past week or two, and partially based on suggestions from this thread, I've been updating the Tips & Notes for the new tree.

Tips & Notes are tied to skill name rather than skill ID, and because of this you will also be seeing updates to the Tips & Notes in the current tree.

The good news is that you now have more extensive Tips & Notes overall, and the silver lining is that you can get a sneak peek at some of the Tree 4 vocabulary. The bad news is that the vocabulary lists added will not be completely accurate for Tree 3, and that some of the tips may appear for skills where they're not entirely relevant.

Tips & Notes example

I haven't had the time to proofread everything yet, so if you encounter any mistakes, please let me know in the comments. I know the formatting isn't always optimal, but since there's a design update coming to the website soon, I won't be focusing on that right now.

Can someone explain me how it works with the trees? Last year I heard the Norwegian skill tree will be updated. Now you said Tree 3 and Tree 4. How can I see which tree I am on and when does someone get the new tree?

Right now, everyone is on Tree 3, the third version of the Norwegian course.

Once we lock and submit the fourth version, Tree 4, for testing, it will start A/B testing on new users. After a while, half of the old users will also be given Tree 4 for testing. Provided it passes the test, everyone will then be moved to Tree 4.

Oh, thank you really much! Btw, I finished the L1 tree last Saturday and now I work on getting everything on L2. Then I will read a Norwegian book. After that, I will start the Danish tree while further leveling up the Norwegian tree. It was a really nice experience and I can't wait to get fluent in it.

Gratulerer så mye! Do you have a particular book you'd like to read?

I bought Flaggermusmannen from Jo Nesbø. If I like it, I will also read the other books in that series. Just in different languages. (want to learn Danish, Swedish and Icelandic too)

Nice! If you enjoy crime novels, you sure could do worse than the Scandinavian languages. :)

I've had no indication that we'll be given access to publishing stories. It's all in-house for now.

Thanks a lot for your work on the new tree :)

I just noticed a small typo in the dessert tips and notes: "en dessert" is "a dessert" (not "a desert").

Takk! It should update shortly. Of course, I'm already having cravings after visiting the Dessert skill... ;)

I have found a tiny typo in the 'Work' module. 'Brannmann" is missing an 'n' :)

Sounds like an emergency situation to me. Takk! :)

A typo in the Bugs Tips and notes made me dream about a future where insects "sing" instead of "sting". Unfortunately not every dream comes true ;)

å stikke - to sting

I would like to leave a little comment for which I am not sure this is the best place to do it. For the first time, I finished a module before feeling completely comfortable with the new words, that module is 'adverbs 2'. I know that people can still practice after getting the module golden, and that's what I'll do. But for balance sake, I think the module could have more lessons, maybe even double. Thanks for everything :) xx
