Duolingo’s new design (previously announced here) is no longer just for the mobile apps. Over the coming weeks, we’ll get it too! The Duolingo website should get its shiny new look in parts, likely starting with our beloved forums. You should not notice any major changes in functionality as much as you will see a difference in appearance. Sneak peek:

We are excited for you to get it, and have a group of staff members working hard on implementing these for you all as quickly and smoothly as possible. After the forums, the rest of the site will also be getting its updates. Thank you for being patient and supportive as we all adjust to the changes, and we hope you enjoy the upcoming fresh new feel of Duolingo.

Good for you that you are excited for us, because we might not be :-D

Will I lose the option to test out of skills beyond level 1 and turn off the word banks like in my A/B version of the updated app?

Are you going to introduce paying for testing out on the website too? Or is that separate from the design update?

Will smoother learning on the website be interrupted by an owl "encouraging" me all the time too?

Also is any development or at least reaction to the previous change planned? Your post concerning it (and other changes plus far from ideal communication about them) got almost a thousand answers.

You should not notice any major changes in functionality as much as you will see a difference in appearance.

Changes to functionality like test outs might happen due to other updates or A/B tests, but not due to this.

Thanks, I just hope those changes won't happen here, the website has been the best part of Duolingo and it would be nice to see it stay that way.

It was a really bad combination of changes in the app. Well, it is deleted now. But it would be sad to leave Duolingo completely. It will be great to get past this huge wave of changes, so that I can make an informed decision whether to really come back or to leave (with thanks for what Duolingo has brought me in past)

And I think that in particular the owl picture interrupting learning sessions after every few sentences was part of the redesign features, or was it an A/B too?

Don't get me wrong, the design is not bad. I actually loved how it got rid of the unrelated images that had been taking majority of the small screen before the change. But it is simply weird to hear more about design than about the more important aspects of Duolingo now.

Do you mean the motivational messages or is there any other change that I am not aware of? The motivational messages can be switched off in the settings.

I find it upsetting that you pay graphic designers to give Duolingo a "Fisher-Price look," while you ignore users who ask for improvements in functionality. One change I have asked for multiple times would be to make comments we post in the forums (including sentence forums) go to the top of our "followed" tab, so that we can go back and get answers when we post questions, or see how other users react to our ideas. I cannot imagine any drawbacks for implementing such a change, but our pleas land on deaf ears. Another easy fix would be to restore the fireworks and fanfares you used to reward us with when we leveled up. And this is not speaking about controversial changes such as capping XP for testing out, the Crown system in general, eliminating the Activity stream without replacing it with a similar function as was promised over a year ago, and eliminating immersion (the biggest loss of all, as it was the only way one could use DL to improve in a language at higher levels). In my opinion, you pay too much attention to inconsequential details while ignoring opportunities for significant improvements.

Hey -- even simpler: just make the forums searchable by our user names!!!

March 18, 2019

https://www.duolingo.com/JimOser

Yes, it would be nice to find all comments from the following, and be able to go directly to the comment, not just to be linked to the top of the original post.

With google, one can find some of these people's comments but not all of them. Also google will tell you if a name is mentioned in a comment, which is not the same, as finding a post by that name. For example, Luis is mentioned in many comments, but it would be nice to see all his comments in chronological order. I don't want to see all the time that somebody mentioned Luis in a comment.

Better, more useful improvements could be made. The Activity stream was a big loss, and maybe they thought clubs would replace it, but the clubs are less used. The fanfares at the end of the lesson or skill were a nice sound, encouraging and motivating you to do more. Thanks

These questions were actually already answered in the original post. They're asking if there will be changes to various functionalities, which the post expressly says there shouldn't be.

March 15, 2019

https://www.duolingo.com/PeterPan173079

But that's not true! Here's what's in the original post:

"You should not notice any major changes in functionality as much as you will see a difference in appearance."

This means:

There will be major functionality changes, but they will be less noticable than the UI changes.

There might even be more functionality than design changes - just less apparent.

I don't understand how you can come to this conclusion. Just read a few more comments and see what the majority of the people say. Many bemoan the fact that these are just changes in the user interface.

March 19, 2019

https://www.duolingo.com/PeterPan173079

Yeah, maybe they didn't pay attention or they might suspect if the functionality changes are being sneaked in silently, they can't be all too pleasant and not what they are expecting.

How I came to the conclusion in my posting? Well the op says so!

If something is less apparent than something else, it has to exist.

If the major functionality changes will not be noticed as much as the difference in appearance - they have to exist.

What is the new typeface that is replacing Museo Sans Rounded? A sneak peek that shows letters with diacritics would be helpful, to see how much difference there is between i and í in the new typeface. Please remember that not everyone has perfect vision, so letter size and contrast can be important for many people.

Thanks for identifying the typeface and providing the link. Unfortunately, that site isn’t giving me the ability to test anything. (Even the Webfont Preview there isn’t showing anything in that typeface for me.)

I can see the characters in the character map tab at Linotype, though; the sample text function there also doesn’t work for me, and the PDF sample there doesn’t have letters with diacritics. (If only they had made a PDF specimen available that included all of its characters …)

I mean, part of the reason Serifs exist on type faces are to make letters easier to distinguish. That is part of why Serifs have an air of being professional and institutional... were as Sans Serif tends to associated with your friend who is sometimes a bit drunk, but you can get them most of the time.

March 13, 2019

https://www.duolingo.com/Firetrix

Serif fonts work well on printed materials but the same is not true for digital. San Serif are more common on digital platforms for the purpose of legibility. This is the general typography principles graphic designers follow.

Do DL designers follow these principals? I have not experienced any difficulty in legibility of latin and cyrillic fonts on Duolingo. (I know I can complain about the fonts that the designers of the app "Calm" use... so at least kudos to DL for that). In general I do think more effort and resources should be put into content and functionality than into design... it's already quite fine if not a bit too childish.

The current typeface, Museo Sans Rounded, is sans serif, and its miniscule acute diacritic makes distinguishing i from í difficult for many people. One good principle to follow would be to choose a typeface with large diacritics for Museo Sans Rounded’s replacement. (Another one would be to choose a typeface that has complete Vietnamese, Welsh, Guarani, Hawaiian, and Navajo coverage — see edit #6 there — since Duolingo offers courses in these languages.)

There is in fact a reason they can't have scarves right away, which is that the trophies would each need to be re-designed for every existing and future languages offered. We should be clearer though: not saying this won't be done, just that it appears it is not included in this first port into the new design because this is a big multi-platform project. I agree that they are awesome and it is completely understandable that we want them to be available to greet and hug us when finishing a tree!

Hi, we're the Duolingo design team, and we've made you this amazing redesign with super cool new graphics, just, y'know, without any of your most favourite super-cool graphics from the last design!

I shall give you a hint about this VERY DIFFICULT design choice:

The Polish owl should have a Polish flag-styled scarf around its neck.

The Vietnamese owl should have a Vietnamese flag scarf around its neck.

The Indonesian owl should have an Indonesian flag scarf around its neck.

And so on.

And, just throwing a wild suggestion out there, but—just an example!—the Polish flag can be decorated in a blazing ruby red and alluring silver-white argent. The Indonesian flag likewise, but try not to get them confused.

I might just be a genius. Hire me?

Will you bring back the flag scarves on our golden owls when the new design comes on desktop/mobile? This new design rolled out on the Android and iOS apps months ago in December and it took away the flag scarves of our golden owls, making the golden owls the same for all courses. The golden owl is an achievement for completing a course, and each course is different so the golden owls should reflect that.

Hi, belridetulo; there are a ton of questions, ideas, demands, and criticisms in the thread, and we will respond to them as well as we can.

We do try to keep the conversation relevant to the original announcement and encourage a constructive tone. You might notice that sometimes a post is not a question but more of a vent, and depending on the tone, the person might not be looking for a reply. Sometimes it is about unrelated feature ideas or something that has already been addressed in a previous comment.

In the case of Nanase-Miyuki's comment, we are trying to get to the right people to find the answer to the question about the scarves before replying. :)

Thank you for making the announcement instead of just thrusting it upon us! I would like a follow up thread regarding XP though soon.

"You should not notice any major changes in functionality as much as you will see a difference in appearance." You say "notice" rather that there won't be any... I will hold you to that though. There are certain things on the app (although they are all at various levels of A/B testing) that I really do not want coming to the site, so I hope that this is honestly just a "facelift."

I've already stated this before, but I really don't like the font change (for vision/migraine reasons) nor unnecessary shadows under buttons. So this change really is not "exciting" for me and I'll probably end up looking for a userstyle to at least revert the font.

It is definitely not, but this type of question tends to come up when we announce something that has to do with appearance. Function is always being worked on, and we have different teams working on a wide range of things, from keeping the site running better, new course launches, content/learning improvements, volunteer tools, bug fixes on various platforms and languages, to new ambitious projects like Stories and Podcasts. This post happens to be an announcement about a major change in appearance but it does not mean we are doing it instead of other improvements.

Sorry, but I haven't seen any functionality improvements. I have, however, seen many discussion forums where users have complained about problems for many years. Why are you spending money on appearance that so many (look at all the comments in this discussion) do not need or want and look at how many people want you to spend that money on functionality. Your priorities are badly directed.

CharlesRit3 - I totally agree with you. It makes no sense to splurge on this new user interface when it was the least of all things that desperately needed improvement.

I mean it almost feels like the project manager or even Luis Von Ahn do not use their own platform. Although I am aware that they probably do. But still, how clueless do they have to be to choose a poorly developed graphic design proposal over a more than overdue reworking of the actual lessons?

Only because I have a twenty-five next to my username, it does not mean I have truly learned German. In all honesty, I think that in order for DuoLingo to be able to teach a language to an intermediate level of fluency (something comparable to a middle school student's degree of proficiency), the courses at the very least would have to triple the amount of content. Until then I will not pretend that I know nor understand the German language like I would like to claim.

Heaven help us! Does this mean you have ported all the bugs from the new mobile release to the laptop too! My mobile app restarts whenever I go away from it for a while to do something else. I have almost given up on it and do much more of my duolingo on the laptop. Don't destroy the laptop too!

Note: I subscribed to duolingo to use the mobile better just before you destroyed the mobile app. I really like duolingo. The volunteers who do the languages are great. Don't let your paid staff and their egos destroy your good product. Test this release!!

Oh that is a shame BillDe, I hope you have reported that bug! Sounds unlikely that it would happen on the website though—definitely not trying to destroy anything. Please do not generalize paid staff vs. volunteers, we all want Duolingo to be the best it can be, and try our best to make that happen. Bugs appear, new things are tested, and changes happen—it is all done to keep Duolingo running as smoothly as possible while serving millions of people for free on multiple platforms all over the world. We appreciate your support, and would love it if you report anything that "breaks" when you see this change on your end.

The big question is will the accents be visible? Will I be able to zoom if they aren't? Or will I have to ignore them still. The fact that you have so far ignored this issue is really detrimental to learning and inconsiderate of older users and those younger ones with less than perfect vision.

I generally use Duo at 67% zoom and even there I find most of the accents are fairly visible in the new font. i and í are a little hard to tell apart, but not when I zoom in to, say, 80%.

You may be able to test what the font looks like here. See my screenshot here for where to look. I don't know if it will work for you - it works fine for me but apparently not for scilling (no idea why not).

edited to clarify that I was referring to the new font, not the old

March 13, 2019

https://www.duolingo.com/KarlKrohn1

I agree. With the current font, it is very difficult to see the accents, especially those over the lowercase letter 'i'. It would be greatly appreciated if the accents were accented more.

I have sensory processing disorder and dark mode is an accessibility need for me, otherwise the site is too bright and painful. Any chance Duolingo might allow people to report individual posts or comments in the forums to moderators ? It seems like overkill to have to submit a report with screenshots and a 'description' write up for clearly spam comments in a thread. [Take 'LOGANGILMA1's comments down below as an example]

Too many websites that I've seen do a redesign get carried away with the artistic stuff and make the site harder to use. A common failing is to use thinner or tinier fonts and less light/dark contrast, to the point where I have trouble reading the site. (I'm not young anymore, and my eyes need additional contrast.)

Since your hypothetical user has subscribed to Duolingo in English. It would be nice if all the Duolingo in English stickies were listed under Popular. Certainly "100 day streak" is not the 2nd most important post for a new forum user to look at.

Many forum users probably don't realize, that if they highlight just one discussion group, the forum listings are completely different.

It would be nice if all the people, who wanted to boast about a streak, complain about losing a streak, asking questions about protecting a streak, could have an easily identifiable place to post all these questions and answers.

Also would be nice if a poster could preview his or her post, before making the post.

Hi, we see your point(s), and these are definitely things we have been thinking about improving, thanks for sharing. ✧٩(•́⌄•́๑)و ✧ As for the stickies, it used to be this way, but there were too many of them and the main discussion page ended up looking very static, so now they show up there when they are new, and after a couple of weeks you have to visit the forum older posts are stickied to in order to see them. We received very positive feedback about this change, and it is unlikely we will revert it. However, we might re-work how stickies are displayed and used in the future. These ideas are, however, mostly unrelated to the announcement of this post, and might deserve their own discussion topic—feel free to add a link here if these end up on a separate conversation so the community can find them!

Depends on how you count and from when on out. Originally it was just a theme for Stylus/Stylish, now the main version is an extension for Chrome and Firefox that also includes an option for dynamic darkening based on the time of the day (there's also still a Stylus/Stylish version, but this one hasn't been updated to the latest changes yet). There has been one complete redesign for which I had to redo literally everything. But there have also been several smaller changes to parts of the website that required adjustments. The new changes to the forum at first glance seem to be quite easy to make adjustments for (I'll start working on it shortly).

The new Forum look is sweet! It's organized, tidy, and I like the round/square text font (anyone else noticed the larger font on the web?).

I'll only miss the owl...this new one looks younger than the one we have now...I fell in love with the owl the way I met it, and soon it's to be gone. Anyway, I'll keep a couple o' screen shots of the old owl to keep me company. Haha!

If only the appearance gets ported from the Duolingo app, and the font is readable -- diacritical marks can be tough to read on the app -- then I'm wildly apathetic about this change.

The Duolingo app (I have only used the iPhone app) might look slicker and fresher than the website, but overall it's a badly managed user experience in comparison.

So this post doesn't come across as too negative, I do have to say that Duolingo is an invaluable asset and the best free language experience anywhere.

But I probably wouldn't hate the app so much -- it does look nice, it's handy and it's easy to use -- if I didn't realize how much better the website was.

So, I'd rather see Duolingo devote its resources to improving the app.

And we don't need the usability issues (correction boxes blocking the user's typed answer, not being able to type instead of use answer tiles on some questions, etc.), or the bugs from the app on the website. And a uniform "currency" -- not just in name but in how its rewarded -- would make more sense than having lingots on one platform and gems/health on another.

Thank you for giving us an advance notice of this change and the opportunity for feedback.

We are often told how there are no staff at Duolingo to create new resources like stories or podcasts in currently non-represented languages, but it seems there are plenty to change things which aren't broken! The new owl looks miserable compared to the 2014 version, who is the only cheerful one of the lot!

DL: I think you'll find most users want enhanced functionality not changes in appearance.

I'm only a moderator, not a paid staff member, but if you think the same people who update a UI can produce courses, then you're crazy :)

I'm about to start work on the Latin course. I can say with all certainty that no one on the staff can provide a single Latin sentence.

Perspective :)

March 16, 2019

Sorry if i'm incorrect, but I think they meant they wanted money to be spent on functionality rather than UI, not that those who work on UI would be able to produce courses. Perspective :)

Sorry, but the OP is still comparing apples and oranges.

They mentioned language content, like Podcasts and stories. The programming for stories is already done. They need bilingual teams to bring them to other languages. The podcasts require zero programming, but a huge investment in time to find people to feature. Finding the right people isn't easy and throwing money at it doesn't magically work.

I find it funny that people assume Duolingo is sitting idly. Everyone on the staff works all day on something, but usually this something isn't as visible as a new UI

The OP is right to compare apples to oranges.

Duo has set out to stock a grocery shop for its customers. It has a certain amount of money with which it can buy a certain amount of apples and oranges. If Duo spends more money on apples it has less money for oranges. Likewise, Duo could hire fewer visual artists and invest in more staff to seek out and manage contributors.

What Duo actually bought (for its grocery shop) with this website redesign was a rubber duck. Oops.

The problem is that Duolingo is spending its money on something that users don't need or want. There are many functionality issues that need correction, but are not being addressed. Duolingo, WAKE UP. Pay attention to all of the comments on this discussion.

You know there will be a baying mob with pitchforks demanding it be returned to the previous version and a small sub-group asking why you ever had to leave behind the good old-fashioned print version they grew up with in the 1840s.

Come to think of it, it was really so much more simple and elegant than fussing about with clay and styli when there was just the wildly-popular 'identify common Palaeolithic animals in proto-Vasconic' cave-wall app. Sadly the audio never worked and there were technical issues with users getting eaten by bears that were never properly addressed.

The web page in its current form is far less frustrating than the IOS app.

I much prefer using the web page in its current form to using the rather irritating IOS app.

  • (1) If you are going to introduce health hearts into the new web page like in the app I will find that discouraging.

  • (2) In the app the silly Duo adds are irritating: such as (a) More Americans learn a language on Duolingo than in the public school system--- This rather ridiculous but true statement is meaningless. Most people in America are not in the public school system anyhow, they have left it already.
    (b) Duolingo uses the data from millions of users to improve the system--- I should hope so. Where are you publishing this research? (c) In Sweden most learners of ... --- Interesting, but I heard it the first time, and the second time and the third time, ... . (d) Learning a language improves concentration and communication skills. --- True, but why tell me repeatedly? (e) etc. ---There are more than 18 of these in my list.

  • These Duo "adds" provide no quality to the app only irritation. Please do not add them to the new web page.

  • The Duo adds that show a phrase and its translation are, on the other hand, a good idea.

  • Duo, on the app, telling me I have just made great progress, besides breaking my concentration, is more of a nuisance than an encouragement. Please do not add this nonsense to the new web page.

  • How do I go to discussion of a phrase on the app? Will discussions be removed from the direct interface at the lesson level in the new web page?

  • How do I see XPs on the app? Will this disappear from the new web page?

  • Your changes to the XP system has altered my behaviour towards doing jump-out-of-level tests for the worst. I simply do not do them any more. That was a badly thought out idea. If the earned XPs were scaled fairly to the number of lessons instead of awarding 20 XPs for a 25 lesson jump-out award say 50 XPs I might be encouraged again to do those important overviewing evaluations. Perhaps such a compulsory 20 XP evaluation should be added to each level.

Please do not destroy the good things in the web page as you did when altering the scoring of jump-out-of-level tests.

I've been more concerned overall that the mobile and desktop experiences are very different. You can't access your clubs on the desktop site, and you can't access the forums on your phone, as far as I can tell.

I haven't looked into it on the forums, so forgive me if it's been addressed -- but is there a plan to bring this functionality to each?

Thanks!

I personally prefer the web version and use it on my tab and on my phone. However there have been occasions when I've not had much time when I've used the app. That's all finished now with the cavorting owl taking up my precious time and having to pay for test outs.

I use the web version on my computer at home, and the app when I'm at work and need to get in some study for the day.

Thank you for continuing to try to improve the product. I hope that next, you will give some attention to evening out the volume levels of the sound. It used to be that the female voice was much louder than the male voice in the Spanish lessons, but now, you've replaced the female voice and it's much softer than the male voice. This unbalance makes it impossible to control the volume so that you don't jump out of your chair when the male voice comes in. Please consider running all the recordings through a professional limiter/compressor (analog or digital) with standardized settings for all the sounds and voices. This is a crucial fundamental task of sound engineering. Thanks.

What is the purpose of changing the appearance? Have people been complaining about it? I think that Duolingo should pay more attention to problems that people have reported. I often encounter instances of correct answers being marked as wrong. When I go to a discussion about Duolingo's answer, I frequently find that many people have encountered this issue and reported it. The reports go back more than a year -- often several years -- and yet Duolingo has done nothing to fix the problem. I suggest that Duolingo should pay more attention to such problems that affect users rather than expending effort on things that few people care about.

March 19, 2019

https://www.duolingo.com/CharlesRit3

Interesting site. Yes, good design can attract customers. However, if there is bad content/performance, one can lose them. Look at all the negative comments in this discussion from current users. Many people don't like change, period. Others have seen some of the changes and hate them. Many others have asked for more functionality.

Obviously, a company must strike a balance when placing its efforts/resources among several objectives. There are other language programs on the web. I suggest that Duolingo's current design is fine, but its performance needs improvement.

I am glad Duolingo is putting in efforts to improve the site in ways they can. I of course cannot say if I like this from just screenshots, but I'm on the more hopeful side.

I do hope that Duolingo can redo the forums, though. They are a bit messy right now. Topics die after a few days due to being pushed down to the bottom, and this pushing-down affect also causes many of the same types of topics to be reposted weekly. A bumping feature might fix this, perhaps? Not sure that would be the best solution, but it is an idea. It just seems like there needs to be some sort of change as to how the forums work. I also think a sticky topic for suggestions would be nice.

As always, thank you for what you do.

Change is difficult, and more difficult for some than others.

I am in a test group, and the longer I am exposed to this new appearance the more comfortable over time I am becoming. In fact more than comfortable. I am looking forward to see this standardization of appearance rolled out across the platform.
I can see that it is also going to allow other changes that I am looking forward to, to improve the platform and fits in nicely with of Duo's aims. Though this is only in my opinion, and I am not seeking to speak on behalf of Duolingo.

As a software engineer I see the real value of having the identical appearance on all three platforms: because it suggests a unification of the underlying code. This is huge, because it would then allow a single bug fix or feature to be simultaneously applied to all three platforms.

I read an article today that Duo has just opened a new west coast office and is hiring more programmers.

So I await this change with great optimism and the requisite patience.

Since Scala (in the back-end) and JavaScript (in the front-end) are used for the Web site, Java is used for Android apps, and either Objective-C or Swift is used for iOS apps, the underlying code is not unified across all platforms.

A convergence in functionality is possible between these three platforms, but it will not come through a unified code base.

I also agree with you Dugggg, being that this is IMO, and not in my role as a GA. ( and as professional Systems Analyst / programmer. )

Though it goes further than that. As it also should be allowing greater potential for learners to more easily navigate between the various platforms.

Again - this is only IMO.

I am enjoying the clarity of the new design presentation myself, and growing more comfortable with it as each day passes.

Thank you, Duolingo, for being an awesome free language learning website/app! Everyone else, please stop whining. Just to be clear, there is a difference between whining and helpful suggestions. Many of you have made very helpful suggestions. Duolingo is free, and you don't have to use it if you don't want to. Instead of spending a lot of your time whining, use your time to learn your language, be helpful, or do something constructive with your time. People tend to respond negatively to whining, so if you have something important to say, say it nicely and graciously.

I paid, and anyway I've never seen any sign of Duolingo meaningfully responding to anything anybody says whether it's said graciously or not. They've taken my money for the year and repeatedly just make the site worse and not at all what I paid for. Duo is essentially just a scheme to turn the efforts of volunteer course-writers into nice juicy profitable ad clicks and subscriptions from the unwary, and I deeply wish I hadn't been convinced to support it. As it is I will continue to make what use of it I can until my subscription runs out, but I don't care for the horrible things they are doing, and I certainly don't want to be told to be grateful for it

March 20, 2019

https://www.duolingo.com/CharlesRit3

Everyone is not whining. A large number of people like what is happening. Many, however, have seen the change and are expressing legitimate criticisms. Others wonder why Duolingo is putting effort into changing a part of the system that is working well rather than fixing other issues.

This is a discussion that has attracted a lot of attention and everyone's opinion should be respected. Shame on you for calling a legitimate discussion whining.

Not too crazy about 'Mark the correct meaning' sentences. The font is small now :-( And the home screen is now childish. NO! Every screen has the 'new look' small font now! (Sorry, I keep updating my original post)

March 20, 2019

https://www.duolingo.com/howtodigatrench

Not that I prefer the new icons, but they're okay; my biggest problem is that too much of the screen is white, as opposed to grey backgrounds. That type of design is fine on a phone, but on larger screens, the brightness can be a little too much.

March 21, 2019

https://www.duolingo.com/nikki872719

The update arrived for me today. I have sight problems, and after my normal practice, my eyes are hurting from trying to read the font. It's like the letters are too close together or something. I enlarged the screen to 120% to see if it helped but still struggling to read it. There's been many changed to duolingo that I haven't liked but I've stuck to using it. I have a 427 day streak and I don't want to lose it, but with the font change I may have no choice but to stop using duolingo. It's just too difficult for me to read and I don't want sore eyes at the end of each day's session. :(

I've noticed that the menu for adding new languages looks different. I kinda like how there are 4 in a row instead of 3 because it feels a bit less like these courses are competing for numbers. But, it does bother me that not all of the course images are adjusted to the same size. However, I think they'll fix that soon.

I've come to terms that no matter how much complaining, the new design isn't going away. It's bearable, and at times a bit better. But, what made me (and probably many others as well) is the fact that Duolingo just threw it onto us.

Initially, the change will only be on the forums. When it comes to the rest of the site, the trees will look a bit different (eg. the icons on the skills will change), but the content and organisation will be the same. Content changes are unconnected to the aesthetics.

To provide the chance of people from across our globe.
Speaking different languages and from diverse communities.
To be able to communicate, and hold a space where there is common respect and we celebrate diversity, kindness and compassion. As well as the gift of the opportunity of learning. Not just another language. Another way of understanding and accepting and respect and growing of opportunities.

Not just for an individual, but for their family, their community and our world wide community.

Not just for the flash point of the now, and for a phenomenal foundation gift for the future.

It is for each and every one of us.

For all our shared futures.

This is also part of what Duolingo provides.

And maybe this is one of the most important gifts that Duolingo provides - a better door of entry to our future as a world wide community.

Yet with that, always there will be change. Always a striving. For our goal is not a fixed point, a zero point of uniformity. It is point of richness of diversity and as a community, providing opportunities for each of us. As an individial, a family and as a humanity.

A humanity that is always changing. In ourselves as individuals, in our families through time, and as a community through time.

Yet - in this community, sharing it, playing our part in our interaction and contribution to this world wide Duolingo Dream.

( roo will now take a break - sorry for this rant. Also note - this is IMO, this rant, and I am not seeking to express the views of Duolingo.)

I am sorry to see that you have to deal with so many negative comments. I think you do a great job overall and you are making a sincere effort to improve the use of the various components of your system for the community. Obviously, improvements cannot be made without change and perfection is an ongoing process. This is something everyone should understand who is learning a new language. As we do so, we even find out that we can even improve the knowledge of our own mother language.

I think you're doing a great job Duo! I'd say if anything never stop improving; after all its not about what tool you use to learn but how you use it to learn. That goes for the user and the servicer. You're a great tool to use, but lets be honest application learning has never been the 1st choice for any language learner, so the fact that your even doing what your doing is a Lingot for you Duo.

Keep it up!

It would be nice if you gave users the ability to see and vote on potential web interface designs before actually implementing any changes. Early feedback could save you from a lot of complaints and wasted time.

Yesterday, I saw a new look on the Stories page and I was not impressed. It did not look like an improvement and it was not visually appealing.

Dear Duolingo Team, I do not really understand why the self explanatory introduction of each lesson has disappeared. I believe it should remain there since it gives you information before taking a lesson and after that you can always go back and check the grammar. Please bring it back!!!

When these changes reach the meat and bones of the Duolingo website, the exercises and practice exercises, I do hope there won't be any of the issues that has come with the redesign on mobile. Things such as text being too small which leads to problems such as diacritics not being noticeable, or Asian text being nigh unreadable; graphic elements blocking one another, leading to a less than satisfactory learning experience; and other minor, but grating annoyances that made quite a number of people leave with a bad taste in their mouths.

With these changes being rolled out to the website, I do hope that the team in charge of these changes have learned from the mistakes in the redesign and not do the same for the website.

Because seriously, I don't want to have to use the computer's magnifying glass functionality just to be able to learn certain languages.

Before creating a new design and putting it on every version, please try to bring the same functions to different versions. On iOS there is still no option to look after comments in tasks. And still there is no option to see the tips on each lesson on ANY mobile version!

Any audio change is unconnected to this, which is just a change in appearance (apart from bugs). Audio is the sort of thing that gets its own A/B test and the decision on whether or not to keep new audio is based on the results of that test.

Cool! Will the currency be converted as well? I can't wait for the design. However, I have a question. When skipping on mobile it costs gems, so as the design changes, will it cost gems to skip. If you also convert to gems, will the "Give Lingot" feature change?

While I use both the desktop version and the phone app when I do not have access to my desktop, the desktop version is far superior and easier to use, so hopefully that superiority will not be lost in the new desktop version.

On a related note, I note that the phone app tracks my "level". I noticed that I got promoted to silver on a week when I had time to do some extra lessons. So, for amusement, I track my "standing" now and then, but have found that the points earned for lessons completed on the desktop don't always get credited on the phone app. Seems to be an intermittent problem, and perhaps there are occasional synch delays? Is Duolingo aware of this problem? Is it being addressed?

I started using Duolingo in his web version but soon I found out that the mobile version is easier to use and more fun. So I shifted to the mobile version. Mobile version has another advantage: Clubs. It makes this version more social than the web version. I would expect these two versions converge somehow, but they didn't do far. The point system is one of these which has been unified so far. But there are more to be done. Personally I don't think that timed exercises helped me much, as they are demanding in typing speed, even though I know the answers. There is not such thing in the mobile version, I would expect to be there, but it didn't happened so far. The new pointing system discourage extreme testing out, but it is too discouraging! Just 20 points only! You could "punish" mistakes more than 4 wrong answers, and give more to exercices without mistakes. I am waiting for improvements, more, to come

March 18, 2019

https://www.duolingo.com/PeterPan173079

I don't care the least bit about the design changes. The old design looks good and the sneak preview looks pretty much the same. I couldn't feel more indifferent about anything.

What concerns me greatly though is the threat that duolingo will alter the functionality of the website along with this change in an unannounced, uncommented, yet absolute fashion. And that these changes will be unwelcome and decrease motivation and enjoyment more.

Because that's how it usually is.

In a lot of countries, mainly European, the "." and the "," are switched, so to indicate one thousand, while in America and other countries it would be "1,000" it would be "1.000," and in the reverse, one half would be 0,5.
