Why does German Practice keep repeating Brot und Wasser, Bread and water countless times?
You can access a somewhat better targeted practice on
You can pick any individual skill you have already started and practice sentences just from that skill.
The official practice looks at which skills are "decaying". This is no longer indicated in DL itself, but this number is still used for practice apparently. Right now, you have all your open skills at 100% (you can see these values also on the duome page). In this case, the practice function does not know which skill to choose and, I guess, simply starts at the very beginning. Once you have many more skills open and haven't worked on a couple of skills for a while, the most decayed skill will be picked in practice. So the official practice function is useful after all, just not right from the start. But until you get there, if you want to practice a particular skill, just pick one on duome.
I have finished my German tree, but I still get an annoying amount of "Wasser und Brot" sentences when I use the official practice function. So apparently, it is not just happening when there are few open skills or everything is 100% strength.
My theory might need to be somewhat adjusted as I just now got a mixture of two decaying skills from my tree. But as long as your "Wasser und Brot" skill is at 100%, it should not come up. Maybe you brought it back up again to 100% after your last annoying practice session? Or maybe it makes a difference whether a skill has been brought up to level 5 or not. I haven't seen any lower level sentences in the practice function for quite a while, and those are all at level 5.
Hi Jileha, how did you bring up the link? I can't find any link on the site which takes me to that page.
Can’t you click on the link in the post? That should open your page. Can you not copy/paste it?
Otherwise, the main site is
To get to your main page, just add your user name after that with a forward slash between the url and your name. To get to the actual tree, add /progress after your name.
That's right. But I think they repeat the last skill you did. In his case Duome is saying he did some skills from Food but it's not complete so the system thinks he needs to practice it over and over again.
Nope. Water and bread are from the very first skill. The skill Food introduces different words and slightly more complex sentences.
Oh nice. I didn't know that, I had the same problem some time ago. Thanks for the help.
Man does not live by bread (and water) alone.....but after a while it gets tedious... need Fisch and Fleisch.....
I don´t know, i find it annoying. The idoms lesson i had was almost all the same words. One time i had only Entschuldigung and sorry.
I found that too, and I started practicing from specific skill set, and the variety is good. I don't use the general practice session anymore.
In the French course, there are many "Canards" (ducks) and "huit et huit font seize". But repetita juvant, the ancient Romans say (repeated things help) :-)))
People learn by repetition but as you do more of the tree and have a lot more words your sentences will be using far more words and you will only rarely be encountering these ones. I cant even remember when I last had Brot come up in a sentence.
To get my 50xp today from lessons, looking at my word list I had over 80 different words being used into todays session. Lot's of variety.
Keeping going. The farther along you get, it will eventually not return to that lesson over and over. In the mean time, you have my sympathies...
Latest practice has no bread or water - but lots of apple eating.....
Oh! I forgot about the apples...But Duo knows that a bit more fibre is necessary for Gesundheit. In Spanish it's the 'manzanas' and in French it's the 'pain.' Although there is less 'pain' in French, you've got to admit they are honest with their choice of words.
Every language has its own repetitive sentences. Spanish likes to point out that the world is in danger. Take it as a lesson of patience. Just say "ommmmmm" the next time water comes to your door and remember "man cannot survive without water" ;-) (another Duo classic in every language)
I wonder there are still some apples left, I thought that the red elephant ate them all before gobbling up all the rice.
If Duo can afford a golden aeroplane and diamond fillings in his teeth, what's a few apples? He probably has orchards in the sky or something. We're doooomed!
Yup, in French that would be the apple. I swear that apple has been there in 90% of the exercises (halfway through so far). Un elephant orange mange une pomme verte...
And German. Is there a conspiracy for people to eat more apples, or something?
They just forgot bit of salz but yes there is a lot repeating at least at beginning. Did do Basic1 in german and one moment it did start feel as test for idiot than learning language. When you have 15 lessons repeating same thing over and over and over and you happen to use your phone for typing all that. Then its become achievement on its own to get through. But sadly it makes Duolingo to fail for making learning fun.
Don't go for gold with all your skills in the beginning. Repetition is golden, but it gets boring pretty soon. Go for level one in a lot of skills and then (while continuing to do new stuff) start a couple of "old" skills at once. If you do, say, five lessons a day you can pick them from different skills then. Good practice, but less boredom. Worked for me, may work for you
In Polish one phrase that came up a lot at one point was...... ona kocha tego kota ....... she loves this cat...... hard to drop that one into a conversation
Because one must never underestimate the importance of bread and water.
It's only really prevalent in the first few modules - you'll stop seeing it after a while. Just keep swimming ...
Volgav vitsenanieff nivya kevach varatsach.
er meinte, "Ich habe keine Ahnung."
But yes, the German practice is far far far more repetitive and boring than the Spanish practice, I have discovered.
