Sí, son importantes. También son tildes. Un menú para comida chino en mi ciudad lee "Nuestro chef tiene veinte anos." Son muy, muy importante.

A huge mistake! specially when you say "Feliz ano nuevo" XD

actually, I might use that one... for example, if I think a friend's new boyfriend is no bueno,. I am forced to wish someone I dislike a happy new year, I can amuse myself and still have plausible deniability. Love it!

I once though that accent is not important until I saw a Spanish political satire, something like this

Political poster during election, showing politician's face

el cambio

After the politician won and ruled for some time, someone vandalized the poster, adding two accents

él cambió

I laughed at the change. and from there I realized the importance of accent in Spanish.

that's the one thing I don't like about practicing on my phone, I'm unable to use accents and tildes. duolingo accepts my answers with a reminder to "pay attention to accents" I wish they would add the little keyboard to the app like they have here on the web

On a lot of phone keyboards, if you hold down on a letter it will bring up options for that letter like accents and tildas and umlauts. Give it a try. Personally I use swiftkey as my keyboard on my android phone and that allows you to enable up to 3 languages so it autocorrects to include accents when I type in spanish.

thanks so much, holding down the letter does bring up options. I'm technologically challenged lol I never would have known that

Try changing your operating system's language. I have both my iPad and my Android phone set in Spanish.

You don't need to change the operating system language on an iPhone or iPad because you can add several software keyboards and set each one to a different language. You then get a key on the bottom line which toggles through the included keyboards.

True, if you only want to change the keyboard. I prefer the Spanish practice from changing the operating system as a whole.
