Meaning of ανάμεσα
I have just done Level 3/Lesson 1 in Prepositions and I have a query about one of the sentences: Ο σκύλος τρώει ανάμεσα στις γάτες. I translated this as The dog eats among the cats, which was marked wrong. The correct translation was 'between the cats'. I had always thought ανάμεσα meant between OR among. If the dog was eating with 2 cats, maybe he might have been between them, but I prefer to think that he was eating with a whole herd of cats, ie. among them! Am I wrong??
I'm sure we have included both "among" and "between" as options. Right now I can't access the page but I'll get back to you.
Yes, indeed we have...[among/between/amidst/in between] as accepted translations. There must have been another error and when that happens Duo shows you the primary sentence which in this case included "between". Please check the sentence for other errors, even a single letter from the wrong keyboard could cause the computer that grades the sentences to reject a translation.
Thank you. The corrected version used 'between' where I had used 'among' - so I assumed that was the error it was correcting. I suppose it is possible I made another error that I didn't notice. But thanks for responding so quickly.
Duo's policy of showing the primary translation is sound but it often causes confusion when someone has an equally correct translation. Your assumption is one we often hear which is why we always explain this policy. and it's easy to overlook a tiny error Yes, your assumption that the error was in the word "among" is very common which is why we always explain Duo's policy. Of cour
The correct translation of "among" is "μεταξύ" which means "in between of many" e.g. "Among the people" = "Μεταξύ των ανθρώπων" but "μεταξύ" also can be used as "between" e.g. "Among the two of them" = "Μεταξύ των δυο από αυτούς".
I don't agree with you, "ανάμεσα" is a fine translation for "among" and equally correct. "Μεταξύ" requires the genitive, which very often can be awkward/problematic.
A British woman was among the 54 victims of the disaster.
Μία Βρετανίδα ήταν ανάμεσα στα πενήντα τέσσερα θύματα της καταστροφής.
Μία Βρετανίδα ήταν μεταξύ των πενήντα τεσσάρων θυμάτων της καταστροφής.
The second sentence, although perfectly fine, sounds slightly more formal and is starting to lean towards the uncomfortable with all those genitives accumulated.
Are you even a native speaker of Greek? Your last sentence is wrong.
