Why are level 5 practice questions so easy?
I have brought a fair number of skills to level 5 in German.
When I'm on level 4, the questions are relatively harder.
When I finally bring the skill to level 5 and want to go back to it and practice, the questions are ridiculously repetitive and easy.
Why? Why not keep students on their toes when brushing up on older skills??
For me, this is the biggest weakness of the Duolingo system.
Totally agree. I don’t believe 225 variations on ‘You are a man and I am a woman’ is helping my French. In fact I think it’s counter-productive. I get bored and stop paying attention. I’m only completing the level for completeness which shows poor game design. They could at least introduce a few new words to help extend our vocabularies.
Why is this good? Completing all the levels should mean you are ready for more challenging language.
It doesn't help when in order to get from level 4 to 5 you need to do 30-50 lessons where you keep translating the same 4 sentences in rotation. It's so useless that I've decided to get everything to level 4 and then unlock level 5 immediately by using the key. All that kind of repetition does is waste your time since it forces you to turn off your brain. I could do 50 lessons where I'm being taught a new word and by the end of it, half an hour later, I still couldn't tell you the word's gender if I was pressed for it.
I am equally disappointed with Level 5 after having finished the whole program yesterday. They promised it would get harder! There are a number of easy Level 4 lessons and I just tested out of dozens of them to get it over with. Now I will probably just review some of the trickier ones from time to time and move on to real life!
