[CHALLENGE] Make a Haiku with your target language!

Bom dia, Duolingers!

Today it's an amazing and marvelous day to do a Language Challenge. The dare today is to make a Haiku with the language you're currently learning.

For anyone that doesn't know what a Haiku is, a Haiku is a traditional form of Japanese poetry. Haiku poems consist of 3 lines. The first and last lines of a Haiku have 5 syllables and the middle line has 7 syllables. The lines rarely rhyme.

I believe that making Haikus, even though they may be hard at first, can help you to develop a better level in writing your target language. In this case, my target language right now is Portuguese, so in that case, I'll make a haicai in Portuguese right here, right now, to participate in this challenge too:

Certo do aquelo,

O que quero,

Não poderia ser.

Translated, it means:

Right from that,

What I want,

Could not be.

The rules are simple:

  1. Make a Haiku in your target language, and comment it in this post.

  2. Make sure you include the translation in English.

That's it! There's no prize. The real prize is the knowledge of a language, and the appreciation for Haikus. I hope you participate! Boa sorte!

What does this mean? Beats me. But that's what poetry is, right? :)

冬が来た (Winter has come)

静かな日 (the day is quiet [lit. quiet day])

While they aren't technically 'direct translations', it's a little difficult to follow the 'rules' and still make it poetic haha.

Your Russian haiku made me giggle :-)

Unfortunately the accusative plural of мужчина is мужчин, instead of мужчины. Maybe you could add an и to the beginning of the line to make up for the lost syllable. ;-)

I don't know if this counts, but someone was complaining about the following sentence in the Esperanto course:

  • "Rigardu malantaŭen."
  • Translation:Look back.

He said it had too many syllables in Esperanto ... so I turned it into a Haiku.

Hajko / A haiku

  • Tro da silaboj
  • "Rigardu malantaŭen."
  • In English: "look back."

The Esperanto word for "haiku" isn't hajkuo? Can you please explain how to make loanwords in Esperanto?

Le ciel est bleu

La vie, ça va très bien

Maitenant, je joue

The sky is blue

Life, it's good

Now, I play

Note, I used "maitenant" as three syllables, usually it's two. Also, I'm wondering about the gender of "bien". It describes "ça", which is acting as a pronoun for "la vie". Anyone know which is correct, bien or bienne.

March 19, 2019

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/E.T.Gregor

"Bien" is an adverb and therefore doesn't change, so "bienne" isn't a word. It doesn't describe "ça" in your sentence, but "va". If you wanted it to describe a noun, you need the adjective "bon" (bonne) and a form of the verb "être". But the way you used it here is correct and idiomatic. Also, saying maintenant with three syllables isn't uncommon in formal speech or poetry

  1. las luces brillan
  2. están más brillante que
  3. el sol, en el cielo. Well, that's all I could come up with. 5 - 7 - 5 - it works!
March 20, 2019

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/RooyAguirre

Haha, that's great! I just have one little tiny, very tiny thing to say:

Luces is feminine in Spanish. In that case, in plural, los luces would be las luces.

In any case, I love your Haiku! Thanks for participating! :-D

Dutch

slapende schatje // Voor jou studeer ik rustig // Luidspreker "uit" //

Sleepy sweetness // for you I study quietly // loudspeaker off

Or was trying for:

My sleepy darling// For you I toggle audio // and do "reverse tree"

March 20, 2019

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Mark841597

Heel goed gedaan!

Since 'schatje' is a 'het'-word, you shouldn't use the -e after 'slapend'. But that would make room to add the possessive 'mijn', which would make it more natural. So: 'mijn slapend schatje'.

btw: 'slapend' doesn't mean 'sleepy', but 'sleeping'. The Dutch word for 'sleepy' is 'slaperig'.
