How to practice a skill without increasing the crown level ?

When I use the blue "Practice" button, I am not getting any exercises from the more difficult skill units. If I want to practice a specific skill, I only see a "Start" button that will gradually increase my crown level.

I took a break from Japanese for a few weeks and now I want to refresh my memory before I start advancing again. If I increase my crown level, I can't ever go back.

I really wish the practice button worked better. It is mostly giving me exercises from the beginner skills with Crown Level 3 and hardly any practice exercises from skills with Crown Level 1 and 2. Logically, shouldn't it give more exercises from the weaker skills ?

Is it possible to practice a skill unit without increasing the crown level?

Yes, via your personal (unofficial, but very useful) progress page

You mean the global practice button?
You have to re-strengthen all previous skills back to 100%.

No, as the algorithm code is pretty dumb. As far as I see it: It simply goes from top to down (skipping over some of the early ~3-5 basic/beginner skills).

Unfortuneately, it does not really care for your weak words, recently learned skills (where a 4h + 12h / 1-6 days SR review interval would be badly required)

Recently was a web code update by staff (XP cap) and it looks like that this has damaged the Tampermonkey userscript "Duolingo skill strength viewer" as well :(

If you try to practice a (L5) skill and it also gives you only the beginner words, picture challenges, "fill the word into the blank" type exercises and too easy sentences:

You basically run into the L5 crown level bug

(does not bring you up the most complicated sentences from L1-L4 with high error rates and full typing, challenging L1->L2 target translations, etc.).

Because of this it is IMHO currently not really advisable - without further bug fixes by staff in 2019 - to move every skill to the highet L5 crown level.

The practice or (hidden) "skill practice" button works better with L0-L3 (L4) skills, but not really on L5!

If you want a challenge: Use the "timed practice" on the web portal.

Code was changed a while back and it got much more challenging right now to even collect 4-6XP or more than 10XP.

I quite often run into 0XP rounds because of the difficulty (using the GLOBAL practice button) ;)

When you press the "Start" button on a skill, the default web address will look something like this:

https://www.duolingo.com/skill/fr/Basics-1/2

If you change the address to end with "/practice" instead of the number ( "/2" in this case ) and press enter to refresh the page, then you can practice without increasing your crown level.

It would look like this:

https://www.duolingo.com/skill/fr/Basics-1/practice

The duome.eu site has a lot of useful information so it's definitely worth checking out, but this way works too.
