All progress lost

Despite still being on Level 12 in French, all the topics have been reset to Level 0 as if I haven't started at all. What has happened ?l

This just happened to me too. I was just getting to the interesting grammar part and finally learning, when I've been re-set to level 0! This is ridiculous

Hey Awidegren (and everyone interested). I figured out what is going on. There are some language courses inside Duolingo (either website or app, and most generally on app), in which your native language can be normally used (I will mention Russian as example of what happened to me; my base language on the app was Spanish). One day, I decided to take a Chinese course, but after selecting it I received a warning saying that THE APP LANGUAGE (not on the phone, but on the app, please be aware) WAS CHANGING TO ENGLISH (since it seems there is no direct "database translation" between Spanish to Chinese and back forwards). I took a couple of Chinese lessons, but when I tried to take a couple more of Russian on the same day... The nightmare, all my process lost.

Of course, I searched the internet, with no clear explanation on what to do, so I knew I had to McGyver my way to solve it, lol...

The first to need to do, is stop trying to reset it using your smartphone (which is the usual device most people here take their courses), and login to your Duolingo account using a laptop or desktop computer. Once there, you will see in the upper-side of the window, an icon showing the flag of your seemingly progress-gone-forever language. Click it. Then you want to scroll down, just to find a SECOND flag of the same language, but with a shorter icon of your base app language (on my example, a Russian flag, with a little Spain flag on one corner). Choose this one, and you will see your progress restored again.

I think Duolingo app & desk programmers, need to either debug this issue to make users able to restore all of their languages from the app (regardless of Android or iOS device), or you know, programming an AI capable of doing the translation on the background, so users see only "our" base language, and the language we want to learn, instead of using "bridges" which as you could see, bring lots of problems to final users.

Me too--all progress lost in French--

I am level 16 and absolutely furious because I was working on an 82 day streak and thought to just test out level zero on all of the stuff I had already completed in French. I have my XP daily goal set to 50 per day and I exceeded that by 33. Saw the flame relight on my phone and the number 83 on my streak counter and thought that was it for the day. Next thing I know I lost my streak at midnight and when I decided to check the website via laptop it only said I had 49 xp for the day. I signed up for the free week of plus to repair the streak but I feel like I was duped in order to do so because of this ridiculous "update". I hate when companies change what we never asked for/ what is not necessary and mess everything up. Furious!

Happened to me as well! I maintained my crowns and day streak but the progress in the tree is all scattered. I was almost at the end of the french course and now I have plenty of courses to do at all levels, like basic 2. This can not be right!

and now, after all the work DuoLingo is back to translating "Oui, Marie." WTF? Stop mucking around with this. I feel I have to look elsewhere to keep up with French.

There's tons of talk about this in the French forum, too. Looks like they rolled out a new French tree. https://support.duolingo.com/hc/en-us/articles/360004472611-Why-did-my-Crown-level-change-

I too came for the same reason. Thanks for the link :)

The link says it might look different, but practically all of my level 5's are now back to zero! Surely that can't be right?!

March 27, 2019

https://www.duolingo.com/Joel475266

Change is good but this takes all the good feelings of making progress away. It would be great for Duolingo to make changes and let us know so we don't have to dig around for information.

Yeah, same with me. I’ve been using duolingo for like six years, and every time it updates I lose my progress.

I actually stopped using it for a year because I had completed my French tree with everything gold, and then they updated it and all my progress was erased. Same thing happened to my other languages when they switched to the crown system. With French, the update at least left my skills unlocked, if reset, but my other languages blocked some skills I had previously unlocked. Very frustrating.

So, I've been using Duolingo for a year and now it's all gone???

March 27, 2019

https://www.duolingo.com/Wonderful1.

I'm supremely upset about this. I've been working for over a year, and all my progress is lost and now I'm supposed to start from the beginning? Does anyone have an email address for the people in charge? This is unacceptable. It's so rude, demotivating and dismissive.

I just found android@duolingo.com in the play store notes and emailed them. I don't know if this is the correct email but I sent it regardless.

I’m switching to memrise. Seems way more comprehensive and actually explains grammar rules. You have to pay for it but right now a year with them is only $30 instead of $80 with duolingo. But at least memrise isn’t giving the illusion of free. Seems the only way to get back your previous lesson scores on duolingo is to pay so you have unlimited unlocks

March 28, 2019

https://www.duolingo.com/dickknubbler

I also came here looking for an answer to this. I was in a 56 day streak and now it's gone. Apparently they did something with the crowns but why not say that on the launch?? Also the idiom course j purchased is gone. And there's no actual email to get an actual person. Fun.

I've posted a 1 star review. If anyone finds another language learning app, can you please post it? If I'm going to start over I want to do it with a developer who cares about their users.

I'm hoping that complaining here will have some effect, but so far no real response from then. No apologies and no plan to set things right. Are they totally dismissive of the users or are they trying to come up with a solution? Before posting in outside forums or ratings, I'll give them a few days to see if they can come up with something. If they won't correct things here, posting publicly might get their attention.

I was in level 10 in French and as of yesterday it's all gone, even though it still says ""level 10" next to French in my language setting. Also, I was asked to login when I opened the app, although never asked before?? I tried starting it to see if it was just a new look but the first question was "un chat" - that's not what I was working up to!

Same problem, French all progress lost after the latest update. Although my Italian and Spanish is OK

March 27, 2019

https://www.duolingo.com/MillionthMonkey

Italian and Spanish are ok FOR NOW. But their attitude is that they can erase your progress without warning or consent. So it could easily happen with other languages too. They don't seem to care????

March 28, 2019

https://www.duolingo.com/Carol184261

Same issue. All my progress is gone and not happy about it and even more frustrated there is no way to contact anyone!!

March 27, 2019

https://www.duolingo.com/Sgremy

Same here - All levels reset to zero with the new French learning tree update...

Has anyone gotten a response from Duolingo Support? This can't be right, a "crown level change" isn't the same as all progress being lost.

March 28, 2019

https://www.duolingo.com/MillionthMonkey

I haven't seen a single apology. Worst customer relations ever (except Comcast)? Contempt for customers (free, or paying as I am) isn't good practice.

March 28, 2019

https://www.duolingo.com/KenGland2

I've lost a majority of my progress. Additionally, on mobile as I'm attempting to "test out" of the basic skills, it will show I get 20 exp points, add them to my daily goal, but then those points don't actually show up past that screen. I've lost my (paltry three day streak), but it's also no longer tracking my exp at all. Which, I know is gamey, etc. but I do like having mini-goals and small races, keeps me motivated. Not so much when they vanish along with my progress.

March 28, 2019

https://www.duolingo.com/d__smith

Same here, bunch of my progress gone...I don't want to go back to lessons with "Oui" and "Bonjour" :'(

March 28, 2019

https://www.duolingo.com/MillionthMonkey

How can we reset to complete the old "tree"? I know it's still there.

It is amazingly demotivating to have evidence of progress gone and the grammar lessons I was so looking forward to disappear. PLEASE LET US CONTINUE WHERE WE WERE!

I have no objection to the new tree, and I imagine it may be better for many beginners.

March 28, 2019

https://www.duolingo.com/dickknubbler

I feel like it may be somewhere on a server but I don't know how users could get access to it.

Unfortunately I don't think the devs read this here or really care what we want. Others in this thread have said they've had this done to their trees before and had to start over.

March 28, 2019

https://www.duolingo.com/MillionthMonkey

The older trees still exist, but they've probably replaced the record of my progress with the few things I've done on the the new tree. Of course they have backups and could restore it, but I'm sure they don't want to go to that much trouble. It's quite sad, but I've lost my enthusiasm for Duolingo. Totally demotivating and unnecessary.

March 28, 2019

https://www.duolingo.com/dickknubbler

I absolutely agree with you and think that it's ridiculous. they have Lost me as a user I'm going to try out another app or two. I'm including a link to an article about language apps but another user posted in a comment above.

March 28, 2019

Coming here for answers as well. I’ve been working really hard from the beginning in French for three months now and all of that progress has been erased and all of my 5 crown lessons have been set back to 0. I can understand new stuff was added but do I really need to do 50+ lessons on Bonjour and Au Revoir again? And the fact I can only test out of level 0 and have to pay to test out of the levels I’ve already done is crazy. This must be a mistake right?

March 27, 2019

March 27, 2019

https://www.duolingo.com/reginasun415

I had the same happen to me 2 days ago as well! Since the same thing happened to more of us, their IT team must have caused a bad glitch for all of us. 60 of my circles were reset to Level 0. I filed a 'bug' because I would think IT should know where we were at and be able to reset it quickly. I am worried that even after I level back up by jumping levels, which will take quiet a while to do given the level I was at, I now don't have much confidence it won't happen again. Did this happen to anyone before?

March 29, 2019

https://www.duolingo.com/dickknubbler

If you read the comments in this thread, at least one other user said it's happened to them before. This isn't a bug. The team knew they were doing it and that it would reset users to 0 and they didn't care.

March 29, 2019

https://www.duolingo.com/reginasun415

really? Why would anyone ever do this? This is upsetting

March 29, 2019

https://www.duolingo.com/dickknubbler

I don't know. There's another link here with an official post from the devs that says they know of the change and they realize that it'll reset our trees and oh well it's for the best.

I absolutely agree with you and I'm completely put off that they did this. It doesn't help that every time I open the app now, it says I can still restore my streak, if I sign up for plus, even though I havent done a course in a couple days. So I'm not entirely unconvinced that they did it so that some of us may sign up for plus. Even though I don't think that'll restore your progress, just your streak. It's kind of gross. I'll be deleting my account soon but I want to watch this thread for a bit before I do.

I’ve lost everything as of today... I was a third of the way through the entire French program. Absolutely devasted and crying. This was a pillar of my whole approach to learning French and it simply doesn’t exist anymore. I’m never using digital media for learning materials again. Looks like this happens all the time. Back to Pimsleur and French in Action for me. Been taking private lessons with a native speaker and textbook guidance anyway. This digital crap is all bound to fail on us eventually and someday, mark my words, it’s all going to happen at the same time and be the downfall of civilization.

Happend to me too. Lrtward below posted explanatory link, but I was attempting to increase my level in each skill, but don't know where to start. Why weren't additional lessons added to each skill instead of using nuclear option? Oui? That's where I am again

April 12, 2019

https://www.duolingo.com/HollyGConnelly

I'm having this problem too -all 12 of my students' progress shows they've only completed "basics 1" and one other skill but if you go to each of their activity logs, it shows they've all completed significantly more than that -I emailed Duolingo and sent screen shots, but have heard nothing back....

April 29, 2019

I have 3 that are not reset to 0 in French... my German isn't affected even though I think the tree changed. I'm really annoyed, I don't have time to redo lessons and don't know what is new content and what is not. I was really satisfied with my progress so far, now just... feel like it's no longer worth it!

Hello, it happened to me this morning. The French forum gave me the solution : go to your account on https://www.duolingo.com/courses on your phone or tablet. Select your language « I speak ... » then select your course. You should see your tree restored. On the same page, click on « Open the application ». Your tree should be restored on your application as well. I hope it works for you too.
