This is very un-PC (politically correct). Nowadays we don't talk about 'old women', (or men, come to that) but 'older women'. Especially ones who write books.
Yes, that's right. Only when "femme" is in a context of "wife" should you translate with "wife", for ex: ma femme, sa femme, etc.
"the old ladies wrote books" is correct as woman=lady, but old wives is not very accurate, maybe that women are not married, am I right?
