Amara Terra Mia

I wanted to share a song that I thought was very beautiful. The lyrics are about the immigrant experience, and leaving one's homeland.

Amara Terra Mia

(lyrics taken from https://chaoticinsurrectionensemble.org/en/songs/amara-terra-mia)

Sole alla valle e sole alla collina/ Nelle campagne non c’è più nessuno/ Addio addio amore, Io vado via/ Amara terra mia, amara e bella

Cieli infiniti e volti come pietra/ Mani incallite ormai senza speranza/ Addio addio amore, Io vado via/ Amara terra mia, amara e bella

Tra gli uliveti è nata già la luna/ Un bimbo piange, allatta un seno magro/ Addio addio amore, Io vado via/ Amara terra mia, amara e bella

(English)

Sun over the valley, sun over the hill,/ In the fields there is no one anymore./ Farewell, farewell my love, I go away,/ My bitter land, bitter and beautiful.

Endless skies and faces like stones,/ Calloused hands, by now without any hope./ Farewell, farewell my love, I go away,/ My bitter land, bitter and beautiful.

Between the olive groves has already risen the moon,/ A babe cries and is breastfed by a withered breast./ Farewell, farewell my love, I go away,/ My bitter land, bitter and beautiful

The song is performed by Domenico Modugno (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AuObk4VAgFI)

One of my favorite covers is by Ermal Meta (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tDp6AsGhNX8)

This song (1971) was adapted from an original one of the early 1900s, sung by women who collected the fallen olives during the harvest. The lyrics are in the dialect of the Abruzzo region.
The original name of the tune was Nebbi'a la valle, but in 1964 it was recorded by folk singer Giovanna Marini with the title Casca l'oliva .

Nebbi'a la valle / Casca l'oliva

(original lyrics)

Nebbi'a la valle e nebbi'a la muntagne
ne la campagne non ce sta nesciune.
Addije, addije amore
casch'e se coje
la live e casc'a l'albere le foje.
Addije, addije amore
casch'e se coje
la live e casc'a l'albere le foje.

Casche la live e casche le ginestre
casche la live e le frunne ginestre
Addije, addije amore
casch'e se coje
la live e casc'a l'albere le foje.
Addije, addije amore
casch'e se coje
la live e casc'a l'albere le foje.

(English)

Fog over the valley and fog over the mountain
in the fields there is no one anymore
Farewell, farewell my love
The olives fall and are collected
and the leaves fall from the trees.

The olives fall and so do the broom flowers
the olives fall and so do the broom's leafy branches
Farewell, farewell my love
The olives fall and are collected
and the leaves fall from the trees.

Thank you, compsognathus. It calls to mind, and to heart, my own grandparents' departures from their families in Basilicata, and the moving book Cristo è Fermata a Eboli by Carlo Levi.

Wow! I really love reading how it has touched certain people in more specific ways with a sense of nostalgia. Glad you enjoyed it! :)

Compsognathus! Mi hai fatto commuovere! "-(
