Duolingo, If you plan to keep the new look
Consider retaining the old one on old.duolingo.com as Reddit did.
This new format (font, background color) is really hard on my eyes. PLEASE find a way to allow us to change the look to suit our needs, or allow us to use the old look. I use the web site on my laptop and my eyes are getting seriously stressed from this new look. It's not fun.
Me, too. I've never had font-related issues reading before, but completing one lesson in the new format was enough to make me feel disoriented and start developing a slight headache. I don't know if I'll be able to keep using Duolingo if this continues.
Yup, one lesson and slight headache, two and full on headache for me as well. I won't be able to keep using the site with this new look.
I agree, and when it gives you "the correct answer" I struggle to read the Hiragana, forget the kanji, the font is that crude its almost unreadable.
My first thought was "Ouch, my eyeballs!!"
I hate it. Bring back the old and fire whoever created this new look!
Same. I don't use mobile (that's what I have a computer for...), and unfortunately a lot of webpages are going to a mobile targeted aesthetic that is excruciating for my eyes.
Try Dark Mode for Chrome. I've switched to using that for the new look and it is really effective at turning all websites into dark mode, so it has no problem with Duolingo.
Dark Mode for Chrome does not work in Duolingo for me. Could you post a link to the extension?
Nevermind :) It doesn't work on the discussions page, but it does work on the lessons.
Personally I don't care about it, just one thing DO NOT GET RID OF THE FLAG SCARVES
Why did they get rid of the flags?! It was a silly little thing, but it was one of my favorite design features of the old look. I liked collecting Duo in all the different flags.
The new look is horrible, it not only is hard on the eyes but it looks really cheap.
Please, consider a way for the old look. (And the flags..) Btw, forgive my honesty but even though is cute, the new look seems like a child's picture or an app for kindergarten (and doesn't really improves studying i think).
I agree. It feels very juvenile. I have children using the program and they were engaged without needing the cute-sy icons with colour. I also agree that it hurts the eyes. I can hardly look at it.
I’m autistic. This design change is disorienting and affecting my ability to function. I have enough going on in my life without having to spend spoons on adjusting to a format change in one of my favorite sites, especially one that happened without warning.
Well it was to be expected. Others have posted months ago that the horrible design was added on mobilephones.
OMG it looks like I am looking through frosty glasses... No clarity, have you changed the resolution to 640 x 480. The fonts are thick and fuzzy... There is no way I can sit and work with this without getting a headache!
So their bright new idea for a new look is to just make everything more juvenile.
Not to mention the functional issues mentioned above.
The color combinations are jarring and they don't blend well. Even scrolling through this thread is hard on my eyes. The graphics for the icons and buttons look terrible.
I found that turning down the brightness on my screen to less than 50% seems to help.
I was dismayed to see the new look when I opened Duolingo on my iPad this evening. I tried using the app previously and didn’t like it so I’ve been quite happy to use the website instead. Everything is too white & bright in this new version. It’s very hard on my eyes. I hope you’ll consider changing it back. If not, I won’t be renewing my DuoLingo Plus status.
That would give the engineers two interfaces to maintain, and two interfaces to bug-check each time they make any sort of change. I'd rather they were spending that effort on fixing bugs.
What major bugs are in the current / old web UI design then?
I do not mind staying on it for the next 3-5 years!
The prio 1 bugs are deeper in the practice / crown session (=lesson) algorithm codes and word lists and will not require html frontend UI code changes.
The prio1 bug "4-6+ same question repeats" within a session which we are encountering since months is also related to the fact that the BACKEND polls the wrong questions and wrongly randomizes the 20 question progress queue.
It's mostly the back-end bugs I'd like to be fixed - stuff in the incubator, the stuff you mentioned, etc. There are also a couple of new bugs that have appeared - words covering the submit button, etc.
Having additional font options and dark theme might help with readability which is the sole problem. For now I've adjusted page size to 80% and it's not as hard on eyes. I don't think this font was designed to be big.
what are themes and CSS
Why does nobody know this?
It's kind of weird, but my duolingo is not updated... I am happy about this because I do not enjoy the old look as much/
