"Play the slack key" is marked as incorrect ?

I've never heard it said in English with "the". It's the proper name of the style and doesn't take "the". That would be like saying "I'm going to the Spain," or, "I will give it to the Neil." However, in Hawaiian, some determiner is always required, so in Hawaiian you have to use "ke".

I see .. thanks. I was thinking it was like "play the guitar" or "play the piano", etc.

Yeah, had to look this up. Apparently "slack key" is a style of playing in which you take a regular guitar but tune it differently and donʻt use a pick. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slack-key_guitar
