What is the difference between “pegawai” and “pekerja”?

"pegawai" is a person who works for government or a company specifically in an office. "pekerja" is more general, it's basically a person who works. so employee by definition can be categorised as both pegawai and pekerja. But for example a laborer is a "pekerja" (preferably called "buruh"), but it can't be called "pegawai"

That's a correct translation too.

I said " ibu saya adalah pegawai yang hotel" how is this sentence wrong and why does yang not need to be used here?

"Yang" means "which is" or "that is"

You wrote something like "My mother is an employee that is hotel"
