A suggestion for the new designs; Night Mode
I personally very much dislike the cartoony new design that was implemented, but I doubt very much they'll change it back or even give us the option of using the old layout. So instead, I beg of you, give us a Night Mode version.
The pure white on gray and gold is obliterating my eyes, I have to look away from the monitor every so often just to keep my eyes from straining. I know some of you will be like, "Oh just turn down the brightness on your monitor." But that doesn't solve the issue nor do I want to continually go back and forth on my brightness since I do a lot of artwork design.
I am surprised by how bad the 'new look' is. I rebooted my computer hoping that something in my browser etc wasn't working correctly. I hope maybe someone from Duo could see how it looks through Microsoft Edge browser and have a rethink.
Works like a charm for me (Firefox user here). Thanks for the suggestion
I highly recommend this Chrome extension (it is far far better than dark reader IMO):

In my opinion, Duolingo looks amazing with its new look + dark mode.
This is definitely an idea I'd get behind, considering I lie in bed before sleeping and use DuoLingo until I can't keep my eyes open any longer every night.
If you don't want to install an extension, one thing you can do if you have firefox is go into developer mode (you can hit F12 to get there on desktop) and then in the "Elements" tab search for "background:" in the body tag. Then change the value of "#fff" to something softer like "#e2e2e2" As long as you keep the developer mode on, that color will continue through different pages as long as you don't hit the "reload" button. Repeat on each type of page you want to change the look/feel.
Completely agree, hate the brightness, it seriously hurts my eyes. Please make it an option. Alrdy browsing for dark add-ons.
I agree with you, but for now I can use a Chrome extension that makes the screen dark.
I personally very much dislike the cartoony new design that was implemented, but I doubt very much they'll change it back or even give us the option of using the old layout.
And here I was hoping that they would give us the option of choosing what look (between the previous one and the new one) we prefer to use :(
I mean at least give the user the possibility to choose...
I think that if Duo adjust their end, making brightness lay in the middle of the scale and similarly for fonts/diacritics and contrast,
then Duo won't need to provide night mode or new/old options (this latter does not resolve the fonts/contrast issue).
For myself, cartoony or squares and such styling I don't mind.
I do greatly mind eye health, now and consequently -including for 'currently healthy eye' children and adults.
yes! i love night mode and i think it would look pretty nice with the site's layout
I’m on iOS, so another theme for dark grey/night mode would be greatly appreciated. The iOS night shift feature itself, even on the most warm setting, can go only so far.
We all know they won't add a night mode until they finish their Telepathy course, which is the 395th language in queue they are working on, before Bird Whistling and Leafblower-Speak.
But in all serious though, there is so much about a night theme in the discussion, I think they will listen to us and add it. It won't be that hard to make, right?
