Norwegian Course Redesign for CEFR level
Hey everyone, I just saw that the French and Spanish courses got redesigned to correspond with CEFR levels. Are there any plans to do the same with the Norwegian course?
While we have a redesigned course more or less ready to launch, it's not structured to correspond to CEFR levels as such. Of course, it does progress in a similar way, as it makes sense to learn the basics first and then build on those.
Our goal is to teach Norwegian as well as possible within the Duolingo format, and it is with that in mind that we've structured the course. The current tree should cover the grammar and vocabulary required for B1. Actually, it covers most of the B2 and C1 grammar as well.
However, that doesn't mean that you'll be able to pass a CEFR test at any of those levels, because Duolingo is better at teaching you to process language than to produce it. Without plenty of outside practice, you just wouldn't pass the oral exam, and you'd struggle with the listening part as well, as there's only one voice used for the audio here and a wealth of dialects in Norway. No amount of restructuring is going to fix that; you'll need good old conversation and listening practice. :)
Since you're already familiar with the course, you can compare it yourself: https://www.examenglish.com/CEFR/cefr_grammar.htm
I imagine there are a lot of us eagerly awaiting this launch -- anything you can tell us about time frame? A matter of days, perhaps, or more like months?
It's going to be great!!
Oh, I wish I knew! We're very eager to share the new tree with you all!
What we're waiting for now, is to be able to switch out the current skill icons with new ones. With the redesign of the site and apps, many of the old skill icons have been changed not just in style, but in what they portray, which leaves half of them making little sense for the skills they adorn. They've also added some brand new ones. The Incubator interface, where we do our work, hasn't been ported to the new design yet.
Once that happens, I can fix the skill icons in an hour and lock the tree. Then we have to wait for Duo staff to actually start the A/B test.
So, optimistically a few weeks, but it's out of our hands.
It's not set in stone, but it now looks like May 15 is a likely date for the tree to begin testing.
If the new icons aren't here by then, I'll send it to testing without them, but that's the earliest possible time slot from staff's side.
Linn, that is wonderful news! Thank you so much for continuing to update us!
Awesome! Norwegian remains the best-organized course I've found on Duolingo to date, so this is one update I'm looking forward to.
