Duolingo Should Let Us Have Customization

I think Duolingo should let us choose what our screen will look like. Like a dark one where it doesn't hurt our eyes and a light one for those who like it.

Yeah, customizability is ultimately the only worthwhile design philosophy as people will always have different needs and preferences.

Not to mention that it would be good for business too. A flexible design has the potential to appeal to more people than a fixed one ever can.

Perhaps a tech savvy volunteer can be found?

Duolingo already uses free labour to create its core product, they can very well shell out a couple of dollars to hire a competent designer.

The new design looks a looot less pleasant than before and also less iconic. A very bad move that was unnecessary, when they could finally have re-added forum notifications, user chat or practice recommendations.

But it's not only the design, but also options regarding the difficulty etc.

How about customization of the learning content we receive? Learning German, I know my weakest area is spelling in German. I want to configure Duolingo to give me more tasks where I have to translate into German, and write the German myself. Instead, I get mostly tasks where I translate from German to English, which is too easy for me, and almost a waste of time.

I personally like the way the website looks. A dark theme would be a nice option, though; sorta like how Discord has it (except, people actually despise the light theme... as do i... shivers in french)

Or maybe have language flags in the background so you can represent your country or the language you are learning.

Yes! And customizing could cost anywhere from 10-80 Lingots to make it an incentive!!!

Why would you give your customers a choice between things you have already developed, that would cost you absolutely nothing to offer, if you can instead put them randomly into a never-ending series of A/B-tests, effectively treating them like lab mice?

Yeah right, as if maintaining multiple sets of everything as well as a feature to switch between them wouldn't have a cost.

I really like everything about duolingo except for the fact that I cannot customize at least the text color. Like you, my eyes literally hurt after a while. Eyestrain actually limits my language study on duolingo. I just don't understand how highlighting new words in orange on a grey background is a good idea. It's really hard to see accents because of that and then I learn to spell the word without the correct accents.

I dislike this theme enough that I've lost my streak and I've been trying other language learning apps.
