Got an owl trophy - disappointed at the lack of flag
I finally finished the reverse Italian tree. Yet I am feeling less excited than I normally am when I have finished a tree. Why? Because Duo is naked, that’s why! Behold!
I am otherwise fine with the new design, but could you, please, please, give the trophy owls their flags back. Looking at my collection of owl trophies always cheered me up and motivated me to try harder. Now it feels like I only have one.
Congratulations on finishing the Reverse Italian Tree. Agreed - Duo needs to go put a scarf on! :)
It would be really interesting to be a fly on the wall when they decided to take the scarves away from the trophies, though. Perhaps it went something like this:
And we can remove those scarves too, right?
Yeah, that will make the owl look so much better. It just looks like some crazy football supporter now.
I'm sure no one even cares about the scarves. Bet they won't notice if we take them away.
That's right. They don't deserve them.
How to make people notice the owl trophies then?
Hmm... It looks quite boring and trophy-like as it is... How about making it look like a six year old having just unwrapped a Playstation 5 on Christmas?
Yes! That's it. People will be so happy with this.
- [the guy who draped a few scarves in spatially impossible configurations reported in the forums]: I'm sure no one even cares about the scarves...
I agree, for the life of me I can't figure out what drove that decision but I think they made an awful choice there and that they should definitely change it back
I suspect taht it allowed them to have just one image for ALL the courses instead of needing a separate image for each course, with the relevant scarf... Probably saves time as you don't need to add more images when introducing new courses, now they all use the same image... Too bad though, the scarves looked really nice...
Not worth it... There should just be a default image so that every course with a flag already would keep the flag...
Kudos to you! And If I could I would award you a scarf for posting something creative and entertaining on this list! (instead of all the daily whining about xp and cartoony designs and asking for a lingot and how to get an owl)
WOw, your rack of 25'ed languages actually gives me more inspiration than the owl...
It seems Duo is getting younger as Duolingo grows older . . . I don't think that's a good thing.
Loving the clip! And yes, Duo golden owl looks decidedly undressed compared to his earlier counterpart. Glad you enjoyed the reverse tree. I've been twice round E/I and will soon finish the reverse which I'm greatly enjoying. If you appreciate Monty P, you have humour - why not join our friendly active Italian club. You would be more than welcome. Oops, forgot to lingot you, here it is.
I have deleted the app for now, so clubs are not an option right now. I do not have a laptop at the moment, so I have to do everything with my tablet. Unfortunately, this means that if I have the app installed, I cannot see the notes, because every time I click on the lessons, the app opens up. It’s infuriating. And having the app on the phone is pointless when you have sausage fingers like I do. :(

Sounds like you are on the IOS platform?!?
Do you probably use the internal Safari browser?
Either try Firefox / Chrome or an Android device.
Quote: I have deleted the app for now, so clubs are not an option right now
Good you did that!
The mobile app would focus too much on tapping and given hints, at least on Android, with no option to toggle back to typing with the keyboard, anyways.
Was this different on IOS?
I can do the "intro placement test" with the Android app for Spanish, pass it and being put into level 9 with many tested out skills and several checkpoints WITHOUT ever having learned this language (I tried it in summer 2017)....only because of the given hints....BUT I failed two times trying this on the web portal.
And Clubs may have being replaced by Leagues anyways.
The "find me a RANDOM club" update from 2018 which swapped over from the IOS app to the Android app since V3.77 is IMHO a failed design and desaster!
But nobody cares from staff.
Isn't it pretty ridiculous that the club description (once set or weekly updated by a club admin) is not readable anymore by the club members just because of the new app versions?
Hello, Thomas! The app opens no matter which browser I am using and I am very happy with my current devices, so there’s no point in getting new ones just because of this one problem. The rest of your comment makes me think that getting rid of the app was a good decision anyway. :)
i wonder if the incubator is usable from your device. it used to run on my android smartphone ok-ish, minus a few features, but has lost much functionality recently. i do not think mobile contributors are thought of much.
Zzz. Just out of interest I work on my tablet, on the app, but have the web version too. Works well in both worlds. Ciao...
I meant that if I use the web version on my tablet and click on Lessons, the app opens. The rest of the web version works fine, but the lessons are inaccessible. The app does not have grammar notes attached to the lessons and I really like reading those, so the app had to go.
Logitech sells a blutooth keyboard that goes with tablets and it goes for around 40 dollars. I have one and it is a God-send for me. Works with cell phones too. the K480 i think the model is.
How do you find out what clubs are available and choose to join them? I'm learning German and when I clicked to join a Club it didn't give me any options it just put me into one. Perhaps that's the only German club there is? But if I were to want to join a different Club, I have no idea how I would go about doing it. Thanks!
Quote: How do you find out what clubs are available and choose to join them?
You can only do this with a much older mobile app version (which lacks the new "mobile grammar notes" and Plus features):
Android V3.72.2 was the last one with the landscape mode and club lists which you could personally select to join: https://forum.duolingo.com/comment/26991732/Android-Clubs-WARNING-New-App-Version-V3-77-5-from-04-13-2018-removes-many-useful-club-functions
Later Android versions make use of the "find me a random club" functionality and do not show you a club list.
I believe you have to be invited. If you meet another student of German with similar interests in the discussion area, you could ask them if they have a membership in a club. Another option is that you start a club and invite learners yourself. :)
Aw!! Well, congratulations nonetheless. Here's hoping that they clothe Duo again soon.
I believe that you should be even less excited for the congratulation message contains a mistake: "unita"(=united) instead of "unità"(=units).
if it's ''unità'', then it's ''delle unità inglesi'', not ''inglese''. plural.
"Inglese" (actually, as you correctly write, "inglese") might refer to "albero", so that's not so shocking. It does sound a bit strange, but "unità inglesi" doesn't sound much better either. I would have written "l'albero delle unità in inglese", but I have the impression Duolingo has a thing for very literal translations.
i mean, if it's ''delle unità'' (''le'' implying it's plural), it has to be ''(de)le unità inglesi'', but that translation makes little sense. So, it's most likely that it's supposed to be: ''l'albero della unità inglese''. That makes a lot more sense.
That makes even less sense to me: there is not just one "unità" (=skill) in the tree.
As I said, it's not completely clear what "inglese" refers to: it may be "unità", the closest word, following a strict grammatical rule, but it may also be "albero", with a construction that can be found in colloquial language.
In English the thing is referred to as "X skill tree", with X the relevant language. However if you have a look at the posts in the forum, people write "Italian tree" or "Spanish tree" often omitting the reference to "skill(s)", so...
Thank you for calling attention to this. It does seem like a small change at first, but it really can be demotivational when compared to previous versions. Tossing a lingot your way for your troubles. And congrats on finishing another tree!
The lack of flag scarves on the Golden Owls is my biggest complaint about the new design, but other than that and the childish artworks/pictures I am fine with most of the changes implemented recently.
Creating computer graphics is very hard, especially on a grand scale such as Duolingo. My hat goes off to the people who have created Duolingo. There are more important things to think about than the look of Duolingo such as actually learning the languages. For me that is the main point. I am grateful for the education I have received from Duolingo and might I add it is free for me to learn it.
Congratulations! Gave you a lingot for your comment. I am new here, so it will be awhile until I see the owl anyway. By that time, I might have a hatching egg :-)
Thanks for asking. I've been on Duolingo for 25 days. I just finished the check point for "Intro" (the first branch?), going into "Greetings". Got the number 42 on my "crowd". I practice like crazy, doing an average of 300-500 XP a day. This week, I have 1435 XP so far, with an "all time" score of 9712 XP.
I agree so much! The new golden owl just looks like a yellow blob. :(
Ay yıldızlı atkı çok istedim, çok istiyorum. Çıplak bir baykuş istemiyorum.
Finally! I was going to reply about the troubleshooting forum, but there were so many comments that mine would be lost. Thanks man! hopefully they will change it back along with these bright new colors
I know it's all because they updated the owl, but please, just give the scarf to the new owl! I am really disappointed, I couldn't wait to get the owl trophy with the Japanese flag :(
The Chinese Golden Owl is the only owl with a flag scarf that I ever achieved. Sad that all the Golden Owls that I will get down the road will have no scarves.
They want Duolingo to be more appealing to children and children prefer simple things over advanced. They also like ones which look more playful.
It should change your texture based on your age then... add your age to your profile and they can change the textures for you. Then we don't have to suffer this...
I totally agree. Here take my 5 lingots. (Yeah they should update shop, lingots are useless honestly LOL)
I just got my golden owl back a couple minutes ago, and I have to say I miss the flag as well.
is better than this-
The scarf is part of it but also the old owl looked more alert and intelligent. The new one looks like an infant who just got a loll-loll.
thanks! I haven't heard that term in a long time, and was unfamiliar with the term loll-loll.
I agree, it's small, but it adds so much satisfaction to a completed tree.
I felt that flag represented me, and my achievement of learning a language all by myself. Learning a language by yourself is probably one of the most pleasing things in life, and taking that flag from the trophy makes the trophy feel just pointless. Oh well, I really don't care too too much. But I truly miss the trophy's flag.
Devolution is apparent, perhaps because of the prevalence of small-screen devices wherein the details might be less important because of screen size.

By the time I joined:
Wow, now I really wish I had started Duolingo in time to get the first-edition golden owl...
I haven't gotten my French duo yet, and because I live in Minnesota, it will need a flag scarf to get warm. Poor, frozen duo. PLEASE bring back the flag scarfs. I think I speak for the entire community when I say the new golden owls are not an improvement. I am neutral on the new design, there could be more contrast, but this is too much. At least give the new duo a cartooney scarf to keep his cute feathers warm.
Geez! The original is just majestic! Now, all we get is a legless golden blob that contains two colors!? What was Duo thinking!?
Yes, the 2011 version was majestic and will indeed not kill you in your sleep
Well I think we can safely say it's better than the 2019, which uses about two shades of yellow.
Those old ones look really powerful, makes the new one feel like it doesn't have an identity. Maybe it would be better if there was a different design for each course if they can't have a flag. i.e. the Japanese course can be Duo as a samurai etc.
How about sumoduo?
Duo le mec (avec baguette) already exists, you just have to make him gold instead of green.
Duo el Caballero is out there as well:
Duo mit lederhosen und bier:
Wow! I was first on Duo in the days of the 2012 owl and didn't realize how baby-ish his design had become since then. (A lingot to you for that!) It looks like Duolingo is gearing the site more and more towards kids. The blatant disregard for the preferences of its adult users (surprise updates, cartoon-y designs, overly bright colors) is starting to make that very clear...Maybe because its easier to get schools and large institutions to pay for Duo, as compared to individuals. A sad sign of what's to come, I suspect...
edit: Today there was a prominent banner at the top of my Spanish tree asking if I'm a language teacher, encouraging me to sign up for Duolingo Schools. So I guess the push for more schools on Duo has begun...
but yet one of the stories in Spanish is the tell tale heart by Edgar Allen Poe which although famous would not be for kids, which I completed yesterday. It was a 6-part story and very scary and full of mischief.
You raise a good point, and remind me to spend more time enjoying the stories here! And as it happens, I was introduced to The Tell Tale Heart (original, not a children's version) around the age of 9 or 10. That was also my first encounter with Poe's work. I don't remember the story well enough now to say if I found it scary or not, but I imagine I would not read it to a child under age 8 or so...
I imagine they would not be able to access this story - just like they don't learn the words for "beer". (Don't know why - I was drinking the stuff by 8)
It is about a man who kills a neighbor and can hear his beating heart after he kills him and can't stand the noise of the beating heart. in duolingo's version the murderer seems to be evil to me, but he could be crazy as he talks about the evil eye that the victim has. I agree that a child of 8 or younger might not understand and might feel victimized by the story and have nightmares.
Not for kids? What was wrong with my district...we read that AND "The Masque of the Red Death" in 6th grade. But maybe it's because I'm from Baltimore, where we go hard in the paint for Poe (because he's from Bmore, even the mascots for the Baltimore Ravens are called Edgar, Allen, and Poe).
Best comment so far. If you take the middle trophy out, the difference is shocking. The first is a real trophy, the second is a funny virtual trophy, the third is an attempt by a kindergarten kid to copy the first with crayons.
Why do they need to make the quality of the graphic design worse?
I actually like the 2012 owl... I must be weird, it looks like it wants to attack you but at least it gives a sense of taking language learning seriously.
the owl are supposed to be improving but 2014 looks better than 2019 to be honest
The 2014 Duo beats all Duo designs past and present and future. The first trophy is the best design with Duo being triumphant and outstanding while his feet is attached to the trophy base and his body.
DAMN. The first owl is... gleaming, powerful, magnificent, whatever other words like that, it's beautiful. I love the way it glows and shines, and gives you a huge sense of ability, like you got this owl, you can do anything! I wish ours still looked anything like that!
I actually really like Duo's current design, but I agree the trophy looks to basic and bare. Give him the flag back and a bit more personality. To be honest, who says the trophy has to match Duo? Why not bring back the old design?
what if they got rid of the owl completely? Maybe replace it with a cool polar bear who takes a swipe at the screen when you make a mistake? Roar!
