Where can I find bilingual books?
I'm looking for books written in multiple languages, where English (my native language) and the other language are displayed next to each other in the book. I'm especially looking for books with Spanish or Welsh, but I intend to learn other languages in the future too, so please share books in any languages, so long as they include English. They can be any genre and it's fine if they're kids' books. Preferably they're available online, for free / cheap.
Currently I'm trying to read Spanish books, but because they don't contain English translations, I have to use online translators to understand them, and I know those aren't very reliable. It would be much more helpful to have books with both languages together.
Also, I know this might not exist, but if anyone knows of something like this for any of the Harry Potter books, with it written in English and in another language together, please let me know. I'm trying to read Philosopher's Stone in Spanish but I'm finding it quite difficult.
Textos Paralelos (alba learning).
Some good suggestions here. There's an "Andersen's fairy tales" site like the Brothers Grimm one I mentioned, as well, where you can get bilingual texts in the same way. And first I'd do the "bookbox" stories on YouTube that are mentioned.
La mujer alta click on a phrase for translation.
Bilingual Pillars of the Earth note, I haven't tried it.
Suggestion: find the simplest books possible. Even Harry Potter will be very slow--go for something like the "Goosebumps" books, or The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. You can find yourself a copy of a book in Spanish and the same book in English, and then read paragraph by paragraph.
These are the ones I have so far (I haven't actually tried them all):
I have found a few in my local public library. They were mostly Antonio Machado, Miguel de Cervaantes, Federico García Lorca, and other well-known but very old writers.
They were in the Spanish section.
I don't know if you ever have used ebay, but they have literally everything, and you will probably have really good luck trying to find bilingual books, and even bilingual Harry Potter books. https://www.ebay.com/ it does cost money, but for books, I always go through them instead of buying new books. It's cheaper than buying brand new books, and you can find books in really good condition
I don't know of any bilingual Welsh books, but you could always buy an English version of The Philosopher's Stone to read alongside Maen yr Athronydd. And they're not bilingual, but I highly recommend finding books by the publisher Y Lolfa. Most of their books are either intended for children or adult learners, and they're what got me to an intermediate level with almost no effort.
Check out the children's section of the GWales website here: http://www.gwales.com/search_advanced/?sf_new_search=2&sf_category=WBP103&tsid=7 I buy all my books from there.
Good luck! Pob lwc!
I'm surprised no one has mentioned the lingq.com website. Creating a list of vocab words (called "lingq's") costs money, but reading on the site is free.
I use my local library. There's more children's books than adult ones, which is fine with me.
Reading on a tablet/smartphone/ereader is also smart. I have a dedicated Kobo e-reader, and I borrow French ebooks from the local library on it. I do have a French/English dictionary on the device, but I also have a French dictionary as well. It is a convenient, quick way to look up words on a dictionary.
Specifically with Harry Potter, I read the book while listening to the audio book. I bought mine off of Audible. There may be pirated versions on YouTube, or your local library may have it.
You could also see if there's an ESL language school/refugee council/Association for Newcomers in your area. They may (or may not) have a language library that you could use.
There are several resources I have seen like that. The Am I Small books come to mind https://www.amazon.com/small-Ydw-fach-Childrens-English-Welsh/dp/1495916146/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=am+I+small+welsh&qid=1554728829&s=gateway&sr=8-1
The Book2 series (Lithuanian shown in the link) https://www.amazon.com/Book2-English-Lithuanian-Beginners-Languages/dp/1440471452/ref=sr_1_3?keywords=book+2+lithuanian&qid=1554728931&s=gateway&sr=8-3
A search for "bilingual welsh" turns up a few others.
For Welsh, main books like Harry Potter can be found in "Y Lolfa" or "The Monster Bookshop" (I ordered a book from them by their Ebay store).
Penguin's Lorca prints each poem in spanish and in English translation side by side.
