What happened to my link to "Test out of X skills" on my french tree?!
I decided to go ahead and complete the last 4 skills in the last section, which is all I had left before my tree was demolished. Once I did that, the link/option to test out of all skills disappeared! WTH?! Now I can't use it to test out of all the easier material that was just added. INSANE.
So, lesson learned, if you want to use this link, don't bother completing any of the skills in the last section, else it will disable the link, I guess. GRRRRR!!!!!
Checkpoints are only for L0->L1 skills.
AFAIK the intro placement neither the checkpoints were compatible for L1->L5 crowns.
You have to use the "skill crown level test-out" on single skills to move above the L1 level.
It should be there on the www.duolingo.com web portal.
It might not be available on your mobile app or your account might be limited (A/B experiments).
Thanks, I'm not on my mobile, and I'm not talking about the skill crown test-out levels you are referring to. After my tree was updated, a link appeared at the very bottom of the tree to "test out of 112 skills". Prior to the tree update, I had only 4 skills to complete. I decided to still complete the final 4, prior to using the link to test out of the new levels that were added. MISTAKE! After completing the final 4 skills (by testing out of them), the link disappeared. The link was located at the very bottom of the tree, below the last checkpoint. Now it's gone. Maybe you don't have it.
I had completely finished mine, all level 5 all gold. After the update, I had loads of skills returned to 0 in addition to the new ones. However, I did have a test out of all skills option instead of the final gold checkpoint button. I did this and every non gold skill went to level 1, but the option is now just a gold checkpoint again. It seems this is a single use option post update to get everything to level 1. If this correct, it's a shame that this is not explained properly, as you and others will have missed the opportunity to at least get out of having to do all the level 1's again, in one go. Having said that, I wont be going any further, as even testing out of the early skills at level 2 is very basic and my time is better spent doing other things. I think the update is very good for beginners as there is more content, but for those who have used DL for a while, the update means lots of boring activity to get back to where they were. I will just use the general practice button on the occasions I have some free time and no other resources with me.
I'm not knocking DL, it's still great, but for fairly long time users, the update is frustrating and 'catching up' is valuable time where you'd probably make more progress elsewhere.
Ugh, only to level one, but at least it got you there. I can't believe that they just take away the link - what a punishment for completing all the skills in the final checkpoint! I just tested out to level one on a "new" skill (one they so kindly 0'd out for me - GREETINGS!) in the first checkpoint - so dang easy/boring, and I saw nothing new to warrant why that was zero'd out. Like you, I'm on level 25, have been doing this for years, and won't waste time going through these again.
Intro placement and checkpoint tests always missed a bunch of words.
I clearly could see it for my DE->EN course where not so many words had been added to my www.duolingo.com/words list in comparison with my EN->PT and PT->DE courses where I went the longer sequential skill-by-skill / lesson-by-lesson route (many more words in my database).
As you have used the test link the big question is:
How many NEW words may you have missed?
On the other side:
Who cares? We have now L1-L5 crown levels which means that some NEW words here and there should popup, if they have not done already in the early L0->L1 crown skill completion step.
Do we know how many words are now in the new French DL tree? I have 4269 in my own list. I'd like to know how many/which ones I haven't done in DL yet after the update. Because I use other resources outside DL, I may know some of them already but I am curious as to how many have been added.
@Thomas.Heiss - thankyou for the links :) Man you are quick off the mark! ;)
Tree12 has 3423-3437 lexemes (vocab column)
See the Languages headline at the bottom of your Duome profile page and "words" text (above the XP progress bar): www.duome.eu/lesley744824
Thanks for your feedback and describing your situation in detail.
This will hopefully help other learners with migrated trees.
Yes, my tree12 has a last FINAL checkpoint: "Test out of 156 skills".
Shall we switch? :-)
I will give you the last French checkpoint back, and you are going to beam me over all the French knowledge you have gained by hard efforts in the last 4-5 years (according to your DL account) ;)
If you do not want to send me ALL your French knowledge I would be of course satisfied just with the rudimentary basics and listening skills of a 1-2 years learning process, too!
Sometimes I wish I could emulate "The Matrix" in my chair and just upload some new skills with a stick into my brain...
There's a 'test out of this skill' button on each lesson for me. There's a button at the bottom to test out of a large number of skills, I've never used it, because I don't feel I'm ready for it. I'm willing to test out of all the new French skills one at a time (at least to get them to level 1.)
Yeah, my button at the bottom is now gone, so I don't have that option, anymore.
Interesting. I've still got mine, but I did notice that all but the last of the checkpoints are marked as 'completed', maybe you have more than one uncompleted checkpoint?
All my checkpoints are completed and it was there yesterday, right BEFORE I completed the final checkpoint. Idiotic.
Might still be some A/B testing going on, I suppose.
Oh well, a few weeks of review won't hurt me.
Hmmm, I have 116 skills now at level one, from a previously all gold/all level 5 tree. If I tested them all out (assuming I got them all right) and it took me 10 mins each, that's 464 test outs, that's almost 80 hours. Unless you spend your life on here, that's more than a few weeks!!
As lesley744824 stated below, the amount of time to go back is insane. Here are the new words I see in the Greetings skill, which I have to start at the 0 level again: Marie and Paul. Now instead of "Bonjour", I write, "Bonjour, Marie !" and "A bientôt, Paul !"
I thought I'd try to go through the bottom skills, to see if maybe it would be fun to start again from the bottom, as they're forcing me to, if I want to complete the tree again. It's not.
I have the same problem. I also can no longer access the link to "test out of." I have forwarded the issue to Duolingo, and I hope they will resolve this soon. This is very important because it really is important to be able to test out of those easier skills. Please report the problem to Duolingo so that they can respond. (I cannot even access the "test out of" function on individual skill levels. It just doesn't work, and I hope Duolingo will resolve this.)
