Finished my Chinese tree

I just finished the Chinese tree recently (within the week). It was sometimes frustrating, especially when the system was overly picky about translations, but I reported these each time and some have even been adopted. I'm also using Memrise and other apps and am able to read at the HSK 3 level after only 5 months. I had the opportunity to use my Chinese in Taiwan recently and was actually able to order food, ask for directions, and occasionally understand responses. Even better, I was able to read many signs thanks to Duolingo's insistent drilling in character recognition (I'm using the chrome extension to convert to traditional characters). Definitely worth the effort (and any frustrations). I'm currently part way through level 1 (started level 1 to review before my trip) and will be continuing to level 5.

Ça me semblait inatteignable aussi il ya cinq mois, mais ça en vaut la peine.

My friend just created a WhatsApp group for doing an English/Mandarin exchange, if you want native speakers to help you out in exchange for a little bit of help with their English.

Here's the Duolingo post about his group with the group rules and the WhatsApp group invite link: https://forum.duolingo.com/comment/31975086

It's a lot better than it used to be, although there are still plenty of missing translations in the latter portions of the tree. I get, on average, about one e-mail a day telling me a suggestion has been accepted, so at least they are evidently still working on it.

was actually able to order food, ask for directions, and occasionally understand responses.

I found this amusing; one thing that struck me when talking to the Chinese (I don't know whether it's universal or just bad luck on my part) is that it never seems to occur to them to speak slower or rephrase anything when a foreigner doesn't understand it—they just repeat whatever it is you don't understand with increasing impatience...

Well done on completing the course, though. I wish DL would get around to supporting traditional characters natively.

I know what you mean about people just repeating the same thing equally fast. I was excited to be able to understand anything though considering it feels like I just started.

I also wish they would support traditional characters. The chrome extension is okay, but I find it slow and buggy.

Congratulations! I can currently read HSK1 and some words of HSK2, but it's taking me forever to make progress... so I was wondering, how long did it take you to be able to read HSK3?
