Finnish incubator storming ahead!

I would just like to thank the current 4 contributors working on the Finnish course (Zzzzz..., Caecusss, outilein and Sande.) for working really hard on the Finnish course. If I am right, the course, in less than a month, is at about 30ish percent completion!!! So happy and can't wait to see the course released in beta soon. :-) Kiitos to those contributors yet again.

P.S: I love Finland! (Don't be fooled by my username and profile picture, I am from the UK) :-)

Whoah, calm down! The truth is that we just have not yet figured out how the Incubator works! I’m currently a bit worried that if I accidentally press the wrong button, I’ll end up nuking the Duolingo headquarters.

Always remember that Special Lion is our spirit animal. :)

You may not have figured out how the Incubator works yet, but you're learning fast! Of course, you haven't yet made the acquaintance of most of the most annoying bugs...

About the link to the coats of arms site... I couldn't stop laughing!

Why does he have a metal arm?

April 23, 2019

Because the lion in the Finnish coat of arms is wearing a gauntlet and an arm piece. :)

Fancy lion

Why he has no teeth would probably be a more worrying matter for a lion. Not to mention the fact that the lower parts of his back legs appear to have been amputated...

Certainly a 'special lion'.

Please, don't do that... ;)

Hei, (if you don't mind me inquiring) missä vaiheessa tarvitsette lisää apukäsiä kurssin työstämiseen? Is there still a possibility to join the team, vaikka vain kääntämään lauseita tms.? I'd be suuper excited to join you guys. Hain jo incubatorin kautta ja odotan siihen vastausta.

Varokaa sitä nappia - We don't want the headquarters to blow up now when the Finnish course is finally coming!! :D (jk)

A certain amount of the course needs to be completed before the team can start inviting new contributors to help build the course. That may take a while. But just in case, keep a close eye on the forum and the incubator updates. :)

The calculation method of the incubator is weird. If there are 20 words added and 7 out of 20 is completed, it shows 33%.

Of course, there will be more than 20 words in the course, so this percentage should go down.

Here is jrikhal's graph for people who can't be bothered to click on a link; progress appears to be 0.5% (weighted, if I recall correctly, against 1500 words):

And 0.5% of 1500 is basically equal to 8, so it confirms my theory of 8/23 :)

Yes, you're more or less right. :) Except that it's not number of sentences translated into Finnish, but number of words with 3 or more sentences.

From what little I know of the Finns, they would rather be hated for the right reason than loved for the wrong one. So I will plug the latest WIS in hopes that at least some of the Incubator spotters will think about the difference and maybe even learn from it.

I can barely wait for Finnish to come out...

Maybe it will be short like Navajo and Hawaiian.

It might be. They might release a short beta course to keep people happy until they release a longer permanent course.

If they release a short course early, people will complain that it's short. If they release a thorough course later, people will complain that it takes a lot of time...

Personally I'd rather wait a bit longer for a full length course to arrive. :)

I would wait for some official progress report before believing that they actually already did 30% of the course.

I don’t know if Duolingo changed their system, but I remember that a couple of years ago the percentages didn’t mean much. It was a percentage of the sentences with a translation (to the target language) among those without a translation. But when a team decides to start a course from scratch without basing it on the preexisting template, then the number of sentences without a translation is not the right one. In other words, if the first thing team Finnish did was to remove all sentences from the template except three of them and then translated one of them to Finnish to see how the system work, then we would see 33% already, whereas this is clearly not the right percentage.

April 22, 2019

Also, the current number is 34.8%, which is equal to 8/23 (up to the rounding), so my guess is that for now they have only 23 sentences, 8 of which are translated to Finnish. So probably not 34.8% of the whole course.
