I'm currently learning Catalan as a Spanish-speaker because that's the only option on Duolingo. Will Catalan for English-speakers become available soon?
There are no plans to build a CA‹EN course so far. We would love to do that if given the opportunity. Please ask the Duolingo staff for such a course. The more people that ask the better.
I would very much appreciate a Catalan/English course if it were to be available.
I'd love to see this as well. There is enough of an influence of French that it makes going from ENG -> SPA -> CAT very hard (I studied French in HS so there's that familiarity). If you need more support/evidence for this, my wife is a college Spanish teacher (for over 18 years) and is now using Duo to learn Catalan - she said the same thing.
Catalan for English speakers would be so useful as I am not fluent in Spanish to learn Catalan for Spanish speakers. Guarani for English speakers would also be great so little material for learning this language is available Native South American languages appear to be ignored, Aymara and Quechua spoken by millions of people Less European languages please
In response to your comment regarding Catalan. Although I now reside in Latin America the family of my wife originates from Barcelona and my wife seems very reluctant to assist me in my goal in learning Catalan and tells me to consentrate on the Spanish language
Very cool, I lived in Catalunya for 8 years and loved it, but now live in Andalucia. My wife was born there (from an Andalucian family but that's a coincidence because when we met she was living in Andalucia and I in Girona.
I have quite a good knowledge of Spanish and a mostly-alright knowledge of French, and although I haven't learnt either of them solely due to Duolingo, there's not that many resources for Catalan, and it's not taught in schools either. I adore Catalunya, Barcelona especially, and I'm interested in a couple of bands who sing in Catalan too. I just think that speaking Spanish to Catalans (especially with the Separatist movement), might feel like a bit of insult, and as though their culture and language is second-best. I like to be as polite as possible when I'm abroad and if learning (even just a bit), of Catalan would show respect then I'd love to learn it. Also, I love how it sounds!
For what it's worth, we are planning on relocating about halfway between Barcelona and Valencia in several years. Such a beautiful place and the history/culture is incredible. We're visiting this fall and I''m just trying to get my Spanish to a reasonable state while my Spanish-fluent wife wants to learn Catalan so puede hablar la lengua del pueblos. We can't wait to visit!
Where are you moving from, and how long are you planning on living there?
