Is the "de" required? (De + isso = disso) Or could you just say "soubesse isso" here?

Soubesse is the conjunctive form hence to translate one should keep the mode So I think that: If he Were (which is the conjunctive of to be) should be accepted. Please explain the change of the mode in the translation. Thanks
