Any major difference between, "Agar" and "Sehingga"?

My Indonesian friend said it's the same. No major difference just the spelling.

Agar - so that / Sehingga - until

I study so that I am smart should have been accepted. I realize the difference but it is the same meaning and not a good example to show the difference between agar and sehinga.

"I study in order for me to become smart" probably should be accepted too? Who agrees with that?
