Diwani was borrowed from Arabic دِيوَان (dīwān, "register; collection of poetry; account, reckoning; council; divan", which is the origin of English douane and Spanish aduana, "customs [office]"). The Arabic word was itself a borrowing from Persian دیوان‎ (dêvân, "collection of poems; council; bureau; court, tribunal; a muster roll"). Other two English words, at least, come of the same Persian root: dewan (via Hindustani) and divan (via Otoman Turkish). All these words were probably ultimately originated in Sumerian dub ("clay tablet; document; letter).
