What happened to the practice button?

Since the recent redesign, I wanted to practice what I've learned. I looked for the practice button on the right side and couldn't find it. Eventually, I figured out that I could practice by clicking the dumbbell button on the bottom left of the page.

This may seem like a minor issue, but I think this is a step backwards in your UI design. Before, the button had the word "practice" on it. Now, the meaning is completely mysterious. I doubt that anyone who is not already familiar with Duolingo will have a hard time guessing what that button does.

And this is not the only issue. In general, I liked Duolingo more than before the redesign. I don't think any of the changes made were real improvements.

There are 2 work arounds I have been using for a while.

1) go to duome. Specifically for you go to, then select the barbell next to the lesson.

2) go start a lesson -- but after starting edit the url by removing the number and typing "practice". Examples from: to:

OK. I don't need workarounds. The button works for me. I am just pointing out how hard it is to find, hoping the Duolingo developers will see my post, and also wondering if anyone else agrees or disagrees with me.

I am unable to log out

This is apparently unrelated to the original post. A new Troubleshooting post of your own would have been a more appropriate place for your comment.

Why are you unable to log out? (Or: What have you already tried?)

Actually, I can make a guess. You are unable to log out because when you click on your avatar on the far right of the navigation bar at the top of the screen in the new layout, nothing happens.

If this is the case (it doesn't have to be, it could be some other bug) then refresh the page, then try again. If that doesn't work, try clearing the browser cookies etcetera.

If it is something else, try answering one of the two questions I have asked, and if you're lucky someone who can give further advice based on your answer will look at this thread, or at the brand new post you make where you give such details.

You might also mention whether you are using the web version of Duolingo, or an app for Android, or an app for an Apple device. This sometimes helps.

To the original poster of this thread, I apologise for furthering an off-topic comment with a reply, but in case the user had left their log-in on a publicly accessible computer (which really should be set to delete all cookies etcetera on browser exit anyway) I considered it a security matter worth replying to.

They did this so they could put the achievements and other things in that same area, but I have to agree with you. I haven’t been on here in a while, so me and my students had to figure it out. We later found out that the dumbell stood for “training” as many people would call it.

I clicked on the the dumbbell and was able to start a practice session. However, the practice session does not work. Also, new lessons no longer work properly. Multiple choice answers stack up so they are unreadable. My account is unusable. My wife's account has not changed. Everything looks the same and works as usual. How can I get back to the old design?
