Fernseh- und Filmtipps (TV and movie tips)

Here are some new(ish) German TV series and movies that are worth watching. I've tried to find out where you can watch them online, but this tends to be subject to change. You may also find them on other streaming services, and they should be available on DVD and Blu-ray as well.

None of these TV series and movies are suitable for children.

Fernsehserien (TV series):

  • 4 Blocks

4 Blocks deals with organised crime commited by the Lebanese mafia in Berlin. It focuses on clan boss Ali who struggles to leave crime behind.

In Germany, 4 Blocks is available on TNT (Sky). Outside of Germany, it should be available on Amazon Prime Video.

Trailer

  • Babylon Berlin

Babylon Berlin is a crime drama set against the backdrop of political turmoil in 1920s Berlin.

Trailer

  • Bad Banks

Bad Banks follows a young German woman who works as an investment banker in Luxembourg. She gets involved in dodgy banking practices and ends up leaking documents to the public, which leads to the collapse of the banking sector and turns her into a target.

In Germany, Bad Banks is available on Netflix. In the US, it's available on Hulu. In the UK, you can watch it on Channel 4.

Trailer

  • Dark

Dark deals with children disappearing from the fictional town of Winden, people leading double lives and time travel.

In terms of aesthetics, Dark has a Stranger Things vibe to it, but the story is quite different, darker and more complex.

Trailer

Dark should be a available on Netflix worldwide.

  • Das Boot

This TV series was inspired by the 1981 movie of the same title about a German submarine in World War II. It's not a remake though. The series has its own story and, compared to the movie, there's more focus on what's happening on land and the French Resistance.

Trailer

In Germany and the UK, Das Boot is available on Sky.

  • Parfum (Perfume)

Parfum is inspired by Patrick Süskind's novel of the same title. The TV series is set in present day in the Lower Rhine region of Western Germany. It follows two detectives investigating the murder of a popular singer. They soon discover it's connected to a series of murders involving experiments with human scent.

Trailer

Outside of Germany, Parfum should be available on Netflix.

  • Der Pass

Der Pass was inspired by the Danish/Swedish TV series Broen/Bron (The Bridge). It follows Austrian and German detectives investigating the murder of a person whose body was found right on the Austrian-German border.

Trailer

In Germany, Der Pass is available on Sky.

Filme:

  • Der Vorname

Der Vorname is a remake of the 2012 French comedy film Le Prénom (What's in a Name?). A middle class dinner party is getting out of control after one of the guests announces he's going name his son Adolf.

Trailer

  • Gutland

Gutland follows a German criminal on the lam who's forced to lay low in rural Luxembourg after his car broke down near the border with Germany. He falls in love with a local girl, finds work as a farmhand and discovers that the villagers share a dark secret.

Trailer

In Germany, Gutland is available on Amazon Prime Video.

  • Transit

Transit is an adaptation of Anna Segher's 1942 novel of the same title. The movie explores the idea of the German occupation of France happening today and follows a German political refugee trying to escape to Mexico.

Trailer

In Germany, Transit is available on Netflix.

Season 2 of Dark also just released a trailer (I believe) and should be available in Germany later this year. Not sure if it will be available worldwide at the same time.

I've watched Babylon Berlin, Deutschland '83 and (the new) Das Boot. There was also a hospital serial called Charité, which I would recommend as well. I expect to watch the new seasons too, as soon as they become available somewhere.
