Bahasa Jawa

I'm a native Indonesian, lived in Jakarta (located in Java) my whole life. Javanese is completely unintelligible to me and it is phonetically far from the Jakartan dialect.

Yes. Javanese is my second native language after Indonesian. Your Indonesian skills would help, yes - just like how your English skills would help you with German. There are (helpful!) similarities, but it's not like with Indonesian and Malay.

Is it understandable? Well I guess that's very complex.

Translation:

No

I am an Indonesian who wants to learn Javanese, even though I am ethnically Chinese. Learning sources in the internet aren't sufficient to learn Javanese. Javanese itself has 3 language levels, ngoko, krama, and madya, which is relatively hard for a beginner. In addition for the poor online sources, learning Javanese needs a professional tutor.

.

P.S. For those who are wondering, ngoko is used for people with higher status, krama is used for people with same status, and madya is used for people with lower status (i.e. a child). So the challenges are real.

I don't think he is a beginner lol. There is many Javanese languages like the rest of Indo. Good luck as the Indo here is quite odd and limited. I can only imagine how more obscure languages end up here...

I live in Banten (it is located in Java, or Jawa) for the past 14 years anddd my brain still can't comprehend Javanese. I only know few words of that one particular language. Bahasa Jawa is another level (in my opinion), and the dialect or accent is very different or may I say, 'beda banget', from the normal dialect of Bahasa Indonesia. But I think if you already know Bahasa Indonesia then it wouldn't be such a burden to learn Bahasa Jawa because the structure (tata bahasa) is pretty much the same. It's worth the try, give it a shot!
