To make money, Duolingo decided to replace clubs with leaderboard-competitions.
Do not update/reinstall Duolingo or else clubs will be gone! >:(
(just kidding clubs are already gone for good)
About a year ago I created a Club with three real-life friends and we were happily learning Spanish using the Club games and incentives. Now our Club has disappeared and I'm in a huge anonymous leaderboard where the only thing that matters is how many xp you earn. This is neither exciting nor encouraging. It's demotivating. I'd really like my Club back please!
The clubs option for me is still here. What I don't have - health, real money for gems, plus option
Consider Persian language! you'll be thrilled by the rich culture and literature.
Once they shutdown the club server-side, the app "club" thing will be dead, no matter if you update the app or not.
This is stupid. Clubs is an amazing thing, it just depends on if u get a club that’s active and good (like my French club) or where nobody ever gets on (my Hawaiian club). It’s all about luck on where u get put. Duolingo shouldn’t take clubs away. It’s partly why I use duolingo is so I can get real feedback and compete with people I know. Pls duolingo, don’t delete clubs...

Oui, vous etes correcte.
In my android phone, clubs are still around But on my iOS iPad, clubs are switched with Leaderboards PERMANETLY!!!
I'm in a similar situation. My XP are counting twice. Once for the clubs and also for the Leagues.
Im really upset with this change ive been using duolingo for like a year and a half learning japanese and i started a club, it was full and i had good people i was helping in it. Now with this new mode I feel im just competing with people. Im.in the sapphire league but its not the same anymore. Duolingo clubs were perfect before. I may move on to workbooks because of this
It's not really competing, even. Only the top three people get actual prizes (that are useless) and usually they all hack or cheat the game, so yeah
Also, Duolingo levels are trash. You don't get anything over ten XP from anything anymore, even though if it's a shortcut for the French Trophy.
I get combo xp daily but its a small amount. I just liked the whole meeting people talking in clubs daily. Helping others when they first start out so they don't have trouble like i did in the beginning.
It's disappointing to me that clubs have disappeared. Responding to an open ended prompt in the club was a fun challenge, and the social element of interacting with others in the new language was more exciting and motivating to me than completing canned exercises. It felt like a great milestone when the first time I went from not being able to understand anything in the club, to being able to read one of the prompts, and then to having actual conversations.
In the app, Duolingo can only input a maximum of 5 tabs, 1 max for learning, 1 max for learning feature, 1 max for profile, 1 max for special feature, and 1 max for shop. Both Leaderboards and Clubs are "special features", so Duolingo must choose which one at a time, rather than both. Similarly, for some users, Gems is inputted rather than Lingots (Duolingo likes the "Gems" because you can buy gems for real money whereas you can't for lingots). Similarly, Practice and Health are both learning features, so Duolingo of course picked Health (people can pay real money for gems, then health for gems).
Also, if you have "practice and gems" format, you have a Plus option (cost a few bucks a month, NOT one-time).
It doesn't take a Duolingo staff to know that Leaderboards are CONSIDERABLY more lucrative than Clubs. Why? Since 90% of users have health and gems, instead of practice and lingots, when people are "motivated" to repeatedly do lessons (that's right, no more high XP yieldings from tests, thanks Duolingo), they see more ads. For "health and gems" people, they see an ad once per lesson, and they have access to Plus (more lucrative) - Plus removes ads. Ads can be really annoying when Duolingo sometimes mix up the "Go Ad Free" and "X" buttons.
In addition, there is this "health" thing for 90% of people. Whenever you get a problem wrong, you lose a health. When you make FIVE mistakes you lose all health you must practise the boring easy-peasy stuff once for a health. You can also wait for health to refill (8 hours per health bar, total 5 health bars, individual times vary). There is only one other option to keep using Duolingo immediately, and that is paying gems (350 gems for health refill). Because of this, one can easily use up all gems, thus needing to pay real money for a gem refill.
If you were in Duolingo, Inc, which option would YOU want to choose?
Y'know, when I first got this notice that "people who are not in a club are put in leaderboards", I thought that it was just a harmless add-on. I have never been wrong-er than ever!
That's unfortunate, I really liked the clubs. I don't think there's anything wrong with the leaderboards, but they shouldn't have replaced it for clubs. Being able to chat with others and practice the language was a great way to encourage language learning. =( I recently re-joined DuoLingo so I don't know what going up in the leaderboards does for people? I'm currently in the silver league and while my current motivation is simply "moving up" I don't know what real incentive there is lol. I have also been testing out of a lot of my French lessons, so that's helped.

I couldn't try the club feature, because I'm pretty new to Duolingo, but the league system I can't stand anymore. It was fun at first, but not anymore. I also convinced a friend to join, and I like to check his progress once in a while. That's why I don't want to turn my profile private. It is these kind of things that make me throw everything out of the window.
