1000 Days and nearly three years
Woohoo! 1000 day streak using the amazing language learning program called Duolingo. A confession, I have used the Streak Freeze feature on three occasions. In my mind this does diminish the accomplishment somewhat. I will say though that the first time I did miss my daily practice, my streak was already over 900.
My three year anniversary with Duolingo will come up in a few days, and what a lovely time I've had here. I've dabbled with French and Portuguese but have mainly plodded away with Spanish. In addition to Duo, I watch Netflix series in Spanish using the English sub-title feature and have a disk with basic Spanish vocabulary and short phrases which I play while driving in my vehicle. I've not had much opportunity to converse in Spanish and have little confidence that I would be able to communicate very well, at least initially.
My primary goal with learning another language is to exercise my aging brain in the hopes of delaying or possibly even avoiding completely the onset of Alzheimer's Disease. A secondary goal is obtaining the gift of being able to communicate with the natives of all of the wonderful countries where Spanish is the official language.
Thank you Duolingo. I use both a computer and iPhone to access the program. I've seen quite a number of changes over the last three years. And what do I think of these changes? Well, I would rate them at least a 9 out of 10. The Spanish instruction with its tree has grown and improved tremendously. I have really only one criticism and that lies not with the move to advertising but the quality of the advertisements. Many of them are just pure rip-offs and scams. Many are defamatory to well known and respected public figures in Canada where I live. I would implore you to be more judicious in your acceptance of advertising.
Thanks again staff and volunteers.
Congratulations on the consistency of your practice ... Well done.
Having worked with online advertising I can say confidently: it's a mess.
Duolingo almost certainly don't choose directly which adverts appear on the site, there are most likely multiple ad vendors in their 'waterfall', probably ending with Google automatically auctioning the space off to the highest bidder when no-one else wants it. The whole process is almost designed to be Byzantine and opaque. And it's worse for us Canadians, if Duolingo are paying attention to what the ad networks are putting on the app, they're doing so in the US only. So they're not paying attention and the ads that appear for us Canadians are fewer and usually of lower quality.
That aside, congratulations on the streak! I hope to achieve the same one day; one thing I differ from you on is the use of Streak Freeze, I feel pretty good about my 212 day streak despite using Streak Freeze approximately once every two months, so I don't think it detracts from your achievement at all!
Thanks. And thanks for the information. As with many things these days, it appears to be a mess - the advertising that is.
I agree, there is no shame in using the Streak Freeze feature. I keep one paid for, just in case. While in the West Indies on a cruise a couple months ago, it was impossible to get an internet signal to do my lesson on one day. Those are the kinds of times when the Streak Freeze is nice.
I just noticed that Duo posted my comment with a 999 streak rather than a 1000. But I swear I have a 1000 lol.
It's cool, just wait till tomorrow and everyone will see that lovely number. Congratz!
Congratulations! I share your excitement at reaching 1000. It's such a good feeling and I wish you many more. A slow connection failed to accept my xp (on holiday in Italy!) so my streak shows otherwise. Ciao and here's to your next 1000!
Thanks Barold. I keep a record in my profile, just makes me feel better. Kudos to you, to borrow Songve's word.
Very inspirational accomplishment! May the next 1000 be even sweeter. A handful of lingots to mark the occasion....
100 days is looking a long ways off but a Duolingo Millennium seems like Infinity. KUDOS on your accomplishments and well written Discussion about your background and assessment of Duolingo.
Thank you. I'm looking forward to the next 1000 - it really is an addictive pastime.
Yes, it IS addictive. Now with the Leaderboard feature, I am doing far more lessons per week than I would have otherwise.
Congratulations pal, Keep it up!! I'm starting my journey in duolingo. I wish i could reach a streak like yours as well
¡Impresionante!
I can read and understand your comment with difficulty. I wouldn't subject my potential audience to my very poor ability to write in Spanish. The comment was really intended for other native English speakers who are trying to acquire another language. But thanks anyways.
Hi BaroldThe1, Congrats on your 1000 day streak! I've used my streak freeze on 3 or 4 occasions and I am on day 1216 of the Spanish program. I'm curious if you may know the longest streak held on Duolingo? I have looked on the site but can't find that information or find a place to ask Duolingo directlty. I never received any type of recognition from Duolingo at 1000 day point which I must admit I was expecting. Anyways, congrats again!
I will like to congratulate you then since Duolingo did not. You are OFFICIALLY a Duolingo MIllenial!!! I just started my own journey and I will like to invite you to guest post your experience and the most challenging parts of your journey so far. I see you reaching 2000 one day. Kudos to you and your effort as well as the consistency and discipline needed to fulfill this in spite of life's ups and downs. https://medium.com/1000-days-language-learning-streak
Hi Sharon. It seems strange to me that Duo doesn't make some sort of celebration at these major milestones but it is what it is. And let me congratulate you on your wonderful streak!! I'm not sure if you are familiar with the www.duome.eu/ website. There are lots of interesting stats on there. For your personal stats try www.duome.eu/Sharon446831/ I hope this helps!
Thanks. I'm really enjoying Duo and you're right it is what it is. It would be good customer feedback if there was actually a place to give feedback! I'll check out those sites. Thanks again and happy learning!
Great work! Your persistence is admirable. I am only 38 days into Spanish and had been wondering when and if I would become confident enough to converse freely in the language. I have tried learning from a Pimsler audio course and my wife is a native Spanish speaker and we live in southern California so you would think that I would be able to get in some practice and gain confidence but at level 14, not yet. I am planning a trip to Peru in December and am really hoping to be ready to speak directly to my wife's family, at least a little. I too am watching Netflix and using the closed caption but so far I am listening in English and reading in Spanish. I plan to memorize many of the lines and then switch to listening and speaking along in Spanish.
Good luck to you. I considering watching an episode once with sub-titles and then re-watching with just Spanish audio. Just takes more time and a little boring lol.
" I've not had much opportunity to converse in Spanish and have little confidence that I would be able to communicate very well, at least initially." From my post
Ha Ha! Thanks. I intend to every day for the rest of my life. Good for the brain.
Have you tried italki? You can converse with native speakers over the internet, may help you get your confidence up speaking.
Thanks for the suggestion. Yes I'd need to step up my game if I want to improve my fluency more rapidly. For the moment, I'm content to just plod along with Duo improving my vocabulary and reading and writing ability. One day perhaps.
Recently I have lost my streak because I finished the circles and stories. Changed my activity to speaking with natives in games and Speaky app + i translate and sing 2 songs a day.
Stop and think for a second, what is it about having a streak or about results?
Ah... we all have different aspirations and different paths to get there. At the moment I'm working to finish the Spanish tree. Learning vocabulary and improving my writing and reading. (also listening skills) The streak is a motivator which gets me to practice Spanish on days when I otherwise might not because of any number of factors. But thanks for the suggestions and the reflection.
Congratulations! The secret to success is commitment. May you have many more 1000s.
Why thank you! And what a lovely wish you've made for me. I'm 67 years old and plan on living another 30 at least :) If Duo lasts as long as I hope to, I shall endeavor to practise each and everyone of those days. Imagine the streak - something longer than 10,000!!!! Best of luck to you in your journey, be it with Duo or elsewhere in life.
felicitations! I have no clue how you managed to do that as you may see the most ive ever done was prob 4 days............ you have unnatural perseverance ;)
Congratulations! That's an amazing achievement.
I think you are very wise to exercise your brain wrt Alzheimer's. IMO, it is something everyone should consider - along with several other activities thought to help (e.g. regular exercise, healthy diet, plenty of sleep).
I also applaud your desire to communicate with native speakers when visiting their country. It's a very respectful and open approach to people - something that we should all aspire to.
Thank you! I also try and balance on a beam often throughout the day. And on one foot. The amount of brain activity required for balance is considerable. Another approach is to use your opposite hand for routine activities such as brushing hair and teeth, eating.
Congratulations! Thank you for sharing your experience here, it's very inspirational!
Yes you can. I too just started. Join me and chronicle your experience here https://medium.com/1000-days-language-learning-streak
Hi, I just started my own 1000 days of language learning journey. It is amazing to see that someone has recently completed their own journey. If it interests you, come along to the blog and tell my readers a little bit about your experience. Congratulations! Visit and ask to join the blog if you have done this journey of 1000 days. The world wants to hear from you. https://medium.com/1000-days-language-learning-streak
Well done!!! It's a really amaising achivment! Some day I had about 300 days in a row and was very excited. I was hoping to achive 365 days. But unfortunatelly I've lost everything. Actually there was a good reason for that - I became a dad of a beautiful girl! So. Good luck and take care!
Thanks and congratulations to you! That's a really important achievement. Please enjoy this lingot.
You are right of course but I notice that you've an even longer streak than I do. Congratulations.
