I've deactivated Adblock for Duolingo, if you also use it, do the same!

Duolingo is an amazing FREE resource, it lives only thanks to Plus users and to some rare ads. If you enjoy using it, deactivate Adblock for the sake of Duolingo!

Duolingo is one of the few websites that are whitelisted by my adblocker, for the reason you already mentioned, but sometimes Duo for some reasons thinks that I have it on. Reloading the page usually solves the issue, but I think it's still kinda strange.

Duolingo thinks I have an add blocker on when I don't. it is so annoying. I hate ads anyways.

I'll deactivate ad blocker once they remove the % complete system!

Yea, I actually just reactivated my adblocker for Duo because of these changes.

Back in the days duolingo had no ads neither plus, they made money out of the Immersion section. Immersion was a really good feature.

what was Immersion if you don't mind explaining? :)

In immersion, they would list articles in your primary language and you would translate them into your target language or vice versa. For example, if you were studying French from English, then you would be given articles in French and asked to translate them to English or articles in English and asked to translate them to French.

I wish they would add that back- it sounds so cool!

Did it some time ago. When I was living in Vietnam and on a Vietnamese server, all my ads were in Vietnamese so it was like an extra added attraction reading and interpreting them. Now back in US and they are in English.

Snort They lost me to adblocker when they enacted the xp cap!

Why would we want to support Duolingo after they keep removing feature after feature?

@I Speak Alien, good question, I for one have used adblocker since the xp cap

If you're gaining something useful from this site - then it's a nice thing to give something in return. Simple moral choice, nothing more.

Mine is active on Duolingo. But since I have Plus, I wouldn't get any ads anyway :D.

no way I'm disabling it, especially when I don't like the recent changes (removing clubs, adding health, making lessons completed display in % etc.)

Aren’t most websites you visit providing you something for free?

May 7, 2019

https://www.duolingo.com/ranuncudahlia

I think the author means that Duolingo provides an educational resource for free, whereas normally you would have to pay some sort of fee or tuition (classes, textbooks, et cetera.)

May 7, 2019

https://www.duolingo.com/TommyDuo

Yes, exactly.

May 8, 2019

https://www.duolingo.com/Stenno1

Yes I understood what he meant, it’s just most places you visit are providing something for free right? Be it a news site or YouTube etc but he feels guilty using it on here because he values what he’s getting from it more.

Hi Tommy,

can you or any other experienced developer help me?

Does it work with any whitelisting?

I have problems that I cannot get Camilo's Tampermonkey userscript "Duolingo Tree Enhancer" https://forum.duolingo.com/comment/19654789/Userscript-Tree-Enhancer running anymore since a longer time.

I wrote to Camilo about the "double loading" problem 6 months ago: https://forum.duolingo.com/comment/19654789$comment_id=29197123

According to him, there is no easy known fix and it is probably understandable that we both cannot waste our valuable time on this matter too much...

Personally I believe it is the fault of that the Duolingo programmers load the www.duolingo.com website twice, on the left side and then on the right side again for the ad window??!?

I can definitely see in the browser console that the script DEBUG code outputs twice, that is is being loaded.
But why?
Why is it being triggered another time for the "ad window / panel"???

However, as you and other developers can probably understand, this BADLY crashes Camilo's userscript :-(

Interestingly, with "uBlock Origin" installed and activated (default, I have no idea how to successfully configure whitelists to get the Duo ads working) it works; so this is my current workaround.

Because of this I get on www.duolingo.com the "Using an ad blocker" blue message in the ad field and so far I am not successful with whitelisting the duolingo.com and sub pages in "uBlock Origin", sadly to say.

If I completely turn it OFF, I now have the problem that the above userscript crashes with NULL stacktrackes as the "tree" and other variable cannot be accessed.

SIDE NOTE: No website should request from a user to disable a tool completely!!
Especially not for the Facebook or any other 3rd party tracking stuff!!!

It just can be this ad panel, is it??

I need to have it working on Firefox V52.9.0esr (32-bit).
Sorry, I am not able to move to newer FireFox Quantum or Chrome versions on this installed PC system...

Any ideas?

May any staff member (admins, senior developer) be able to tell us how to correctly configure our browsers to use Duolingo, please?

I have no idea when I lost this functionality....it was working somewhere in 2016 or 2017...maybe even a few months in 2018.

With best regards

Good news: I finally found the nerves to retype my message and submit a bug report.

In canary it only loads once for me, with one exception out of ~20 refreshes where it loaded twice. Turn it into a chrome extension? Then you have a higher control over loading.

May 7, 2019

@elvper

Bad news.
Firefox V52.9.0esr uses the old Firefox addon model.

AFAIK only newer Firefox Quantum are truly compatible with the Chrome " extensions API" or the new plugins in the addon FF store, but they are both not with this Laptop ;)

@elvper

Isn't that "double loading problem" even a bit ridiculous as all Memrise Tampermonkey userscripts works flawlessly?

I am a Java (backend) developer, not a html / JS frontend specialist but I wonder how they actually load the nested ad panel on the right side so the home/learn tree page triggers double instantiation in Tampermonkey?

Camilo told me to try Violentmonkey...maybe one day when I find the nerves for that.

May 7, 2019

https://www.duolingo.com/elvper

I'm not a developer at all xD. But I've also noticed something like a double load before when inserting elements into the div with the "root" id.

It could be a DOM checker that validates the page HTML within that div and if it fails, reloads stuff. The way I handled that in the past was by not changing any HTML within the "root" div and instead adding elements outside of it. But this might be different from the issue you're having because of the ad thing you mention. But might be worth a try. It could also be linked to a DOM checker that verifies whether users have an adblocker active or not whenever an ad is loaded. In relation to that, perhaps check for a specific element to be present before loading the script? Wouldn't surprise me if that would solve it.

Hi! I'm so sorry, I don't know why this happens, sadly I'm not the right person to help you in this. If this persists, consider sending a report to: https://support.duolingo.com/hc/en-us/requests/new

They keep telling me to support free education. I would but only if Duolingo stays the same for both paying and nonpaying users, Not if the cool features are for users who have money.
