Please bring back the Duolingo Language Bots!
First of all, why were the bots discontinued? I believe that many people loved them and would still love them when and if they ever came back. Are there any plans to bring the bots back?
I just recently reread the forum where the Duolingo team anounced the bots and people have been posting comments in the past couple months asking them to bring the bots back. What did you guys think about the Duolingo language bots? If you never got to experience it, what do you think of the idea? Share your experiences and thoughts on the Duolingo bots! Please show your support for wanting this great feature back by commenting on your opinions and upvoting this thread so it will be noticed by staff. :)
Here's the link to the introduction of the Duolingo Language Bots: Duo Language Bots Look at all the upvotes! Think we can beat that?
Yes, the bots were a great feature! I really like getting to try out actual conversation skills. I wish they would bring them back.
Yes! Sometimes I know the vocabulary but need to try practicing conversational skills! Thanks for you support of the Duolingo bots! :)
I never got to experience the bots and I really regret not joining DuoLingo sooner. I hope they bring them back so that lots of us can actually test our skills out.
mudisloud, Yes! Thanks for supporting the Duolingo language bots! Edit: If you're in total favor of this please consider upvoting. ;)
I enjoyed the bots quite a bit and would really like them back. I am good at reading and translating the languages I learn but having a conversation helps a person think in the language they are learning. That is the most helpful when trying too speak it. Please bring them back
I agree I loved the bots and wish I had them back. They were useful and fun. Many of my friends got into Duolingo through bots. ; )
Last month I asked Duolingo’s head of learning science if bots were coming back, She said they are ‘working on it, hopefully soon’ See here > https://twitter.com/BozenaPajak/status/1107651119721992193
For Spanish learners, there is a chat bot to try out > http://www.soydiego.com/soydiego/
I've never tried them since i've just started using Duolingo but this sounds like it was a really good idea. I would love to see them back.
I never got to use the bots. It sounds like an amazing feature though and would be an extremely helpful language learning tool. It seems to me that the bots are good for actual conversational skills rather than just translating skills. I would like to see the bots come back. For the support of your idea and this thread I have given you 5 lingots as well as an upvote.
I would like to see the bots back, too. I took a break from Duolingo and have missed them since returning. It was good practice.
I loved the bots! It really gave you a chance to practice the language you already learned. You not only get to practice the language, but you learn as well! Reading what the bot said made you comprehend what it means and what you need to say. If you didn't know what the bot said, it you could click the word to see what it means. Also what I loved about the bots is the fact that the better answer you give, the more XP you get! So instead of a simple "Hola," you could say, "Hola, mucho gusto ¿Como te llamas?" This really pushed me to give the best answer possible, and to use more of my Spanish vocabulary. If Duolingo could bring this back, that would be great, and get more people motivated to learn on Duolingo as well!
Yes, the bots were wonderful, but you could spam xp. Since there’s no reason why I shouldn’t say this, the best way to get xp was as follows: Go to the bot talking about going on a walk. Tell it you don’t want to go on a walk by double tapping ‘n’, which autocorrects to ‘no’. 20xp. When they fixed that, the second one was the bot about going on a plane. As before, say that you don’t have a passport. Get told you are going to be arrested, get 10xp.
There’s probably someone who’s going to be upset about this, sorry if you now think I am one of the horrible people on Duolingo who don’t care about learning languages, that doesn’t apply.
I don't really care about the competitive aspect much, I want bots for their educational value.
Awww... That's sad. :-( I'd be happy to practice with the bots for no XP though... :)
Is it bad that I would have done the xp spam. But would have wanted to still learn a language.
ok so i have never seen Bots or even heard of it. I did click on the link to read about it and it sounds interesting. If anyone is interested in letting me in on this that would be awesome.
Joined barely 25 days ago, but I'd like to have a conversation. I have a father who learned German for his mission in Germany but I barely talk to him in German since I'm very new.
I agree, I’d like them back. I’ve had some time off Duolingo, and disappointed to not find them now I’ve come back.
They were an incredible feature. They were so useful. It was a good way to practice. Duolingo Devs should absolutely bring them back in my opinion. Even though users could spam xp, it was still worth. 'Cause we all are here to learn a new language / improve what we are learning.
Mmmm...interesting,I really want them to have duolingo bots because I'm want to have a conversation skill in a different language
I agree! The bots were awesome! I miss them so much. It was incredibly valuable to have a safe place to practice and have to think on my feet. I would LOVE to see them back and with them a microphone feature so we can practice speaking more often. Because of the way Duo is set up, I am much more confidant in my written and translating skills than in my conversational skills. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE bring them back!
I never experienced Bots. But, I think Bots are necessary if we want to practice the language much more effectively. Please consider introducing Bots to Duolingo.
I think that the bots were a really interactive and interesting feature, and I, even if not a mobile user, would like to have them back.
We can do this JJ! Thanks for posting!
I must say that while exercises are all very good, we need bots to chat with in the language if we are to become fluent independently.
Bots were a great way to think of what to say next in a situation rather than translating or doing somewhat random sentences. The lack of scenarios and story is the main criticism I hear wrt Duo. I wonder if the bots fell victim to the evil patent dilemma that so does not protect customers.
I enjoyed the bots for the chance to use my mic in conversational manner. And I felt that the sentences made more sense when they were used in context, which is not the case in your typical Duolingo exercises.
That said, I assume covering a lot of possible answer options must have been strenuous, and introduction of stories may have played a part in taking away the bots.
Also, I'm still sad about not having Immersion anymore. That's another feature I'd like to have back.
The bots were a great feature. Why they removed I don't know, but what you could do is write a petition, send it to Duolingo and maybe that way you'll get their attention
I was around when we had bots, I like the concept but I hated the bots themselves. They weren't really that good and didn't really understand more complex sentences, I suppose if they were re-implemented they could be better but in the mean time... I'd recommend "hellotalk" for those that want to practice conversing in their target language.
I only used the bots for a little bit, and then stopped using Duolingo. When I came back, they were gone, and I was extremely disappointed. Please bring them back! They really help with conversational skills, not just translating.
I remember when I first joined Duolingo that one of the biggest features were the bots. I left Duolingo for a while and recently returned about seven-to-eight months ago (although you won't see the 250 day streak on my profile) and was looking fo the bots to practice my French with. I saw no reason as to why they had to do away with them but I find that the stories help fill that desire to apply French in a (sort of) everyday fashion.
I was trying to find out why DuoLingo removed the chat bots, and came across this article quote from DL's company’s co-founder and chief executive, Luis von Ahn.
“We’ve built up a process where we can build a new [chatbot] conversation every two days,” von Ahn says. But in the long run, the plan isn’t just to have a lot of potential conversations piggybacking on the main app: it’s to have one chatbot, that is the main app. By 2020, “my dream is for Duolingo to be as efficacious as a human tutor. If you were to spend thousands of dollars on a human tutor, we want Duolingo to be as good as that” he says. “In particular, I think it’s going to look a lot like a chatbot; a significantly smarter one."
That was three years ago. Apparently Ahn is still "the man" but the company's goals and strategies seem to have changed dramatically. I miss the days of being motivated to keep three trees all gold, reviewing less in languages I know better and a lot in one in which I was a relative notice. That was a satisfying daily accomplishment that really kept me learning. This week, I'm pushing for top of a league, but I am not expecting that to bring satisfaction. Winning means less than a half of one percent increase in lingots, and I'm doing it by drilling the oft repeated stories in two languages, not by focusing on words I haven't reviewed in awhile because DL has abandoned skills strength. The crown drills bore me to tears, but I do enjoy the stories -- or did until the leagues changed my motivation. Next week I'll drop to a reasonable pace to avoid burnout from so frequently repeating the stories. The chatbots were more interesting than crowns drills, and possibly more relevant than most of the stories, and unlike stories, you could answer chatbots differently when you repeated them. DL, if you're listening, I know you like metrics. How about assessing intrinsic motivation or joy? I recognize that takes input from users, not just server stats, but maybe driving joy or fun is correlated with the metrics associated with ad revenue? Thank you for providing DuoLingo.
i never got to use the bots but i heard them mentioned and have been wondering (and searching for a good language chatbot) ever since
There actually is an app launching on kickstarter called Magiclingua. This app teaches you how to speak languages through video tutorials and uses AI to correct your grammar. If there was bots back on Duolingo, but improved like this kickstarter app it would be great. Duolingo is great at writing and reading, but with this speaking aspect you would be able to learn a new language in no time.

Was wondering the same thing, Songve. I don't know if it is a glitch, or something like that. I think this is the second time I've seen it happen!
same. I was surprised how it got 54 comments and 95 upvotes already... probably some weird glitch :|
