The gender of the noun defines them. So, if the noun is femenine, you should use sa / ma / ta, whereas son / mon / ton is used for masculines.

sa chemise (chemise is femenine), son pantalon ( masc.)

If the noun is feminine but starts with a vowel you use the masculine article. Eg: mon amie.

french is so difficult - theres so many beginnings and endings of words all depending on the gender of them!
