Upvote this post if you agree that Duolingo should make a "nightmode." A nightmode would have an option that darkens the background from white to a less harsh color at night time so you can do duolingo without killing your eyes at night.
Yes I agree, especially because Duolingo even says studying a language before your bedtime helps in retaining information
There is an app on apple computers and phones called flux. It turns the color of the whole screen more orangey, and it calms your eyes and helps them go to sleep once you have finished.
If you have Windows 10, it's now a built-in feature. Settings > System > Display > Night light.
This is really not the same thing as having a black screen, but it's still helpful.
Great idea, I do lessons at night a lot, and yeah, it kills eyes! Lingot for you!
Some users have written scripts for dark mode , you can try searching/scrolling posts. Here is an example of one:
If you're a web user with Chrome, there's an extenision you can download from the Web Store called "Dark Reader." It turns all of my websites black including duolingo. Here it is: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/dark-reader/eimadpbcbfnmbkopoojfekhnkhdbieeh
It's also available for Firefox. I'm using it right now. It works well with Duolingo, usually doesn't obscure texts or images. Just turns the backgound dark and is also customizable.
That's a great idea, haven't thought of it, judging by the number of upvotes there is a fair chance this will get implemented some day so well done!
Fantastic idea, I would use it all the time because I find dark backgrounds easier on my eyes no matter what time of day it is.
If youre on the computer and use chrome install "Dark Mode" on chrome. The images on duolingo look a little wonky but at least youll save yourself from a headache.
Also another good program to use is f.lux which you can install on pc or mac. It reduces the amount of blue light from your computer screen and replaces it with orange light which lowers eye strain. It even adjusts depending on what time of day it is.
Wait? What does this say!?! I cannot read anymore after 7 nights of exposure to Duolingo's white screen!
I totally agree.
Yes I think this is a good idea, I tend to use Duolingo a lot in the night and early morning and I end up squinting because of how bright it is. PS: I'm the 500th upvote ;)
If you use chrome, there's an extension called dark reader. It makes all websites dark if they don't already have a dark mode. https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/dark-reader/eimadpbcbfnmbkopoojfekhnkhdbieeh?hl=en-US
If you use Apple, you can invert the colours on your phone by going into settings, then click on general, accessibility, display accommodations, invert colours , then press classic invert. It changes the colours of everything on your phone. I have tried it out many times before, and the Duolingo colours are Halloween themed ( Black, Orange And Purple). You get a turquoise sort of colour if you get the question wrong. I hope this helps you! ( I’m not sure about other phones) :)
In the meantime, get a blue light filter for your device. PC has f.lux and android has Twilight (dunno about iOS). These will turn your screens more red at later hours of the day which vastly reduce eye strain (which also means less damage over time).
I strongly recommend getting one even if you don't plan on using Duolingo at night.
It should be a subtle grey, hard to look at the screen when eyes are dying. You have my upvote. :)
Yes please! Nightmare would be amazing (I'm visually impaired, and bright white backgrounds really hurt my eyes).
Dark mode for the app would be amazing! Even for general use as I do find white backgrounds can be a strain, and well... aesthetics too. Yup! Geat idea.
i agree since most apps have a night mode and me aling with others may use it at night since we are night owls
I've thought about it as well, as I often do my exercises late at night. Shouldn't be that hard...
You can force the background and font color of your web browser. Then you should be fine.
Yeah, especially when you jolt awake at 11:25 PM remembering to do a Duolingo session.
Twitter has this feature and so does my phone, it is very helpful and useful, as well as it keeps my eyes from straining. I don't need eye problems I already have ear problems. Anyways this is defiantly an upvote from me!! In the meantime, have you tried other sources, like chrome extensions??
I totally agree! That sounds like a dream come true. I also practice Duolingo in public places whenever I am waiting or something, and it's a little annoying how bright it is even with the brightness turned down enough so you can still see the words.
Yes! That sounds great. They could also add a dark mode where the background is black so it doesn't hurt your eyes as much at night.
literally right now my eyes are burning just looking at this. Duo needs to add that.
Agreed whole completely on the current theme being a bit....intense. Myself and Jonathan Dalgaard are currently working on another extension (there are already a few extensions that do this mentioned in the comments) that allows you to customize the colors / theme of the Duolingo website. Its VERY early in development but if youd like to give it a spin and leave feedback it would be appreciated.
Extension can be found here: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/duolingo-appearance/oifnhalickiahlaoacabfafjaibhhimo
and is fully open sourced so you can view the source code here: https://github.com/jonathandalgaard/duolingo-appearance
No, please no! Don't confuse the apps offering night screening thing like flux for apple or 'reading mode' for others or 'night mode' for the other others. None of these make up for an app with a black - darkened - bg and calmer colours. Please do add that feature ... you know, if it's not too much trouble.... for first six months of introducing it only make it available to duoplus guys so people pay you for the fine work you do...I'll wait for the day it trickles down to me like all things are supposed to!
Yes. I was just doing a lesson and had to stop because the bright screen was hurting my eyes.
Yes, please!. At lease make the fonts white with the green background. I can't read the dark green on light green when there is comment on a correct answer :(
