Anyone else not getting the choices from a list of words voiced anymore? (Edit 2: 12.05.19)
Until yesterday I always got a voice whenever I chose a word from the given lists, but not anymore. I tried with different browsers but it doesn't work on any of them. It's pretty annoying, since it greatly helped me remembering the reading of the Kanji.
Edit: It partially works for me again, Kanji are still without audio more often than not and hovering over words still doesn't work but it's a step forward.
Edit 2: Everything works properly for me again, if anyone postponed their practice until the bug is resolved now seems to be a good chance to continue.
It suddenly happened to me too overnight. Luckily, the audio still sounds for word tiles on my phone app but not on my computer for some reason.
It's really annoying and counterproductive because part of what helps me learn the spoken language is hearing the language, especially on the newer lessons that are less ingrained in my head. So I hope this is just a really weird bug and not a new "feature" because it actively makes learning more difficult. It's discouraging progress because now I'm going to spend a lot of time and energy today being annoyed at this change rather than using it to do more lessons.
It's not just the Japanese course, all courses are affected. The audio pronunciation no longer plays when you hover or click a word in a language you are learning in the desktop/mobile. This is a very poor decision that worsens the learning experience and makes learning a language more difficult.
Same here. I filed a bug. Please file a bug if this is still happening to you!! (second day here). Not only do I not get audio when clicking on words, the audio we used to get when hovering over Japanese has stopped as well.
Oh thank goodness! I was getting so irritated last night thinking it was my computer I was about ready to throw the thing across the room!
Like others, it works on my phone and tablet, just not my laptop.
Its been like this since the bonus XP update. They probably removed it since it was 'too confusing and challenging for new players'.
Or they just don't QA any basic functions like the modern game dev industry. Cause rollbacks are completely out of the question.
Well I'm glad I'm not the only one who noticed this recently. If this was another new 'improvement' that Duo have implemented, it's a dreadful one; as a couple of others in this thread have mentioned, it's incredibly difficult to actually memorize and learn certain words/kanji when you can't hear them being pronounced.
Things are fixed for me now as well. All the kana word tiles have audio again (with the exception of the occasional kanji — but that's an old problem, since not all kanji had sound to begin with). I've done a full lesson with the audio completely back to normal.
Same here, i think it's to improve your reading i suppose? but i'm not sure. Could be a bug.
I can see that reasonsing, but it's rare enough the kanji are given instead of the kana so in exchange there'd need to be at least a way to know the correct reading like adding furigana.
For the past two days, the Japanese audio hasn't been working for me when picking tiles from a word bank or when hovering over Japanese words. On Friday I thought it might be a passing server quirk or something going on behind the scenes regarding the course update, but since it's persisting today, I've submitted a bug report detailing the lack of audio. (I exclusively use the web browser version of Duolingo, so I don't have any data on the audio in app versions.) Since this seems to be a widespread problem, if it's still happening for you I encourage you to file a bug report too.
Sound has always been really buggy on Duo, but now more than ever. Word tiles aren’t giving me any sound in any language for a couple days now.
