Five Year Streak

Today marks my 1826th day in a row on Duolingo. Started the practice a few months earlier before deciding to try for a seven day streak. Then a one week streak turned into a month and then a month into a year...

My goal was to be able to read French which I'm able to do (along with a dictionary for some unfamiliar words). Speaking would be another story which I don't think can be accomplished with any proficiency unless you're in a class or, better still, immersed in a country.

Before beginning work, I sit down at the computer and do a few exercises. If the day is getting away from me, I'll try to get an exercise in on the phone. For the few times I haven't been able to get to the site, the Streak Freeze has saved the run.

So I'd like to give a shout out to all who've made this possible and all who are trying to learn another language and understand another culture.

Avec une sincère gratitude merci beaucoup.

Well done. I guess that my 413 day streak is in the early learning category! This plus five years of high school French which I really value now. I have however joined a ‘French ‘ class ,attending each week to enable me to try speaking the language.I have found it most rewarding as there are many advanced French learners in this class. Getting better with each week.

Sort of related: I'm taking my wife out for dinner this week to celebrate 2,000 days (just over 5 years) since we first met (and fell in love, all in one day!). I've counted my blessings ever since, I've never looked back, never had a moment of regret. I said very soon after we met, 'can we try and go for six months without an argument?'. We've still never argued yet; we may disagree about things, but that's OK! Fortunately, we don't give each other reasons to be angry or upset.

Does anyone else here do anniveraries by the number of days as opposed to number of years? I guess I like to do things uncoventionally...

Congratulations on figuring out the secret to happy marriage. Letting off a little steam before things escalate to a full blown argument, is so important.

I wish you and your wife many thousands of happy days ahead.

Merci beaucoup pour vos gentils mots! Chaque dimanche, nous passons quelques minutes à discuter des événements de la semaine précédente et nous vérifions avec chaque participant qu’il n’ya pas de problème à mijoter. Il est important de se sentir écouté, valorisé et respecté. Cela peut sembler un peu formel, mais comme vous le dites, il est utile de se défouler un peu avant qu'un argument complet ne prenne de la vitesse. Eh bien, cela fonctionne pour nous quand même!

Try watching anything you can find in French, because the difficult part isn't so much speaking, as understanding when people respond! Also, you can improve your pronunciation by mimicking what you hear.

Meanwhile, felicitations et bonne continuation :-)

Congrats! First I suggest you go to the "Words" page : https://www.duolingo.com/words then try to master pronouncing all the words you have learned one by one, by listening and repeating, you can find the pronounciation on an online dictionary (larousse for example) After achieving this you will have mastered the basics in pronounciation just like you have mastered the basics in grammar and vocabulary, After achieving this I suggest listening to native french speakers on videos, podcasts, TV, radio..., try to listen to french every day and any time you can, after a while you will notice that words and phrases will come out smoothly and beautifully, simply because they are engraved on your mind along with their sounds.

May 13, 2019

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/lunazee

Look at all the languages you're tackling. I tried to do Spanish and Italian along with French a few years back and just got confused. Last year I picked up Spanish again and it's going better now that I have a solid French base.

May 14, 2019

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Seattle_USA

As far as speaking, I now rely on hearing instead of reading, as much as I can. This fully changes it to audio instead of visual. When you get used to hearing the sentences without seeing you will start pronouncing everything far better and will at least be able to understand when people speak to you in France. I suspect it will make it easier to answer but I haven't tried yet. I'm still in mourning for Notre Dame Cathedral by the way. I went to France twice last year by incredibly fortunate circumstances that my work sent me to our office in the UK twice on emergencies and I had a weekend both times where I could take the Eurostar (chunnel) to France. Both times I failed miserably at speaking when I got there. Next time I expect to do much better. But my favorite place I kept going... ah I'm in mourning. I'm glad most of it was saved.

May 13, 2019

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/lunazee

That's a good point. The more you hear and use the language the easier it will get.

The fire in Notre Dame was devastating. But it wasn't a complete loss and hopefully the restoration will bring it back it's glory.

Lucky you to be sent to Europe for work. :)

Felicitations, Lunazee! I've been following you on Duolingo and Memrise! This makes me so happy that you're still here! You're doing great! I agree with you about learning the language and not being able to speak it. I feel uncomfortable speaking the language and have to force myself to repeat the sentences on Duolingo. I'm looking for a good book with new vocabulary and real-life situations to read this summer like La gloire de mon pere by Marcel Pagnol. Keep up the good work!

May 13, 2019

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/lunazee

Nancy, you are my inspiration and follow you on both sites as well. So impressed by your dedication. I've dropped the ball on Memrise several times, in the last few months. My husband gave me a subscription to Rosetta Stone for my birthday and spending time there too.

For more training, I read French magazines and newspapers online and follow a few french people on Twitter. Been watching "Un Village Français" and "Engrenages" on MHZ Choice.

Bonne chance avec tes études.

May 14, 2019

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/rejsegal

Incroyable, très impressionnant. I studied French in school and also spent a summer living in France, with a French family while in college, many years ago. I agree, the only way to become truly conversational is to be in situations where you have to speak the language. I just signed up with a local group that meets every two week to speak French through Duolongo. You should celebrate with a trip to France :-) Bonne chance.

May 13, 2019

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/lunazee

Good luck with your group. I bet you'll have a lot of fun and improve your French quickly.

May 14, 2019

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/undeniallably

I really recommend Pimsleur French for learning to speak the language. It can be obtained for free in many public libraries. It gives you confidence in basic conversation. It doesn't provide a very extensive vocabulary but you have Duolingo for that. It really helps with perfecting your pronunciation. I have had french people compliment my pronunciation and let me tell you they are not easily impressed! Once you have completed levels 1-3 I would recommend italki where you can take oral lessons with a French teacher.

May 14, 2019

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/lunazee

Thanks for the tips. I've heard about both platforms but hadn't met anyone who has tried them. Congrats on achieving good pronunciation. French is so much more guttural than English and it's difficult training your throat to respond correctly.

It seems like giving a Lingot is pittance for your impressive feat. Just imagine that I am handing over all of my 372 Lingots to you. It takes a lot of dedication to complete five years in a row. Quite an accomplishment, and a testament to your character.

I would love to hear more details about your process. Is it really as simple as doing a few exercises every day on Duolingo? That isn't easy, but is pretty straightforward.

Did you practice out loud, or do anything else that seemed to spur your fluency?

Congrats again. Well done.

May 14, 2019

Thanks so much for the kind words. Lingots are the funniest things. Not sure what the point of them is after awhile but they keep piling up. Wish there was an easy way to gift them to others who might be in need.

This platform makes it easy to continue. And it's fun and has become a habit. I try to get a few lessons in before starting work.

Recently started Rosetta Stone which is helping me with pronunciation. at first it seem too simple but after a few months it's really helped.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/lunazee

Haven't had the opportunity but guess I'd be able to muddle my way through. My husband gave me a subscription to Rosetta Stone for Valentine's Day which has pronunciation exercises that are helpful.

Speaking wasn't my objective. I wanted to be able to read newspapers and follow threads in French on Twitter.

May 12, 2019

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/simoneatt11

give a glance to Italki... could be somehow useful for starting practice... Many congrats :D

May 12, 2019

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Sandie141941

I started off with Rosetta stone ("RS") before moving to DL. RS is great for pronounciation practice and for really listening to the inflexions when you are doing the spelling sections. DL, however, is great at getting you to formulate sentences in French when doing the translations, something that by its immersive nature, RS misses out on.

I have just managed to find a local 'Breakfast Club' led by a French teacher for conversational French once a week (complete with coffee and croissants!) which I hope will help put it all into practice as English is not allowed to be spoken.

Finally - well done on the amazing streak!

You hit Five years on Duolingo. But Your French xp is 46077 and Your crown is 163. I think it is too small for Five years. I hit 100 days streak and my crown is 191. I think you should take more lessons than now

May 14, 2019

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/lunazee

Congratulations on your streak and crowns.

Duolingo has changed the way rewards are awarded several times over the years. At first it was fluency, then crowns. The reward system has never been that important to me. I'm also studying Spanish and using 2 other language apps at the moment. Happy to continue to learn and wish you continued success.

May 14, 2019

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/NancyMihalich

ForsinardFalun, suggesting that Lunazee should take more lessons when she has completed all of the skills on the tree is quite rude. The crown system on Duolingo was rolled out less than a year ago and the crown system has been controversial regarding its' pro's and con's. The only benefit I can see to the crown system is that makes each skill turn gold! I would rather have the ability to read and write in french than have a lot of crowns! Have a great day and congratulations on your Level 20 and almost completing your French tree.

Remember when we were graded on proficiency, Nancy. I bounced back and forth between 60 and 70%. And I would have graded myself in the 30s at that point.

The crowns seem to add up fairly quickly and guessing it's to keep encouraging people to keep going. I wasn't doing french exercises here much and soon realized what was happening as my spanish crowns started multiplying.

Yes, I remember the Fluency Shield! I didn't take it seriously! It was capped off at about 70%, if I remember correctly! It was based on reading and writing short sentences and not speaking skills! Duolingo can't determine anyone's ability in a language. Some people have had experience with the language outside of Duolingo and that's not reflected in the Duolingo level or other metrics. Some people who are very good at a language can test out and finish at around level 9. The people who test out and finish the tree early often know the language better than someone who finishes at a higher level. Duolingo is a free learning app that is always changing to attract new users! I love the gaming aspect of it!

Je te félicite, car pour assurer un tel chalenge il faut avoir beaucoup de constance et de courage, et tu donnes de l'espoir à des personnes comme moi qui n'ont pas encore "le feu sacré" vis à vis de l'activité quotidienne du DUOliste moyen.

Merci. C'est la façon dont duolingo a été conçu cela a rendu possible. Sans le Streak Freeze, je n'aurais pas fait un an. J'ai fait quelques rêves récemment en français, donc c'est définitivement imprimé. :)
