Problem with the Kahakō

I've noticed that Duolingo marks my macron accent as wrong because I use a dead key to produce it. The resulting character is "ē" (LATIN SMALL LETTER E) + (COMBINING MACRON) instead of "ē" (LATIN SMALL LETTER E WITH MACRON) they look the same however duolingo is marking me wrong for using the combined character with diacritic. Is this a limitation of the way the site handles strings or can this be fixed ?

I believe that this can be fixed if you add the Hawaiian keyboard to your device and switch to it whenever you do duolingo lessons (:
