The new Japanese 2.0 Course is live for new accounts! [Screenshot included]

Here is a screenshot. You can check to see if you got the new tree by comparing what you have with the below. You should be logged out, create a new account and start Japanese and when you get to the tree you will see 92 skills like below.

Some tips, troubleshooting and more info thread on getting the 2.0 tree

Since it is a random A/B Test instead of opt-in you may have use incognito/private mode in a webbrowser and keep selecting Japanese until you get the new tree, then create your account.

I'm very impressed that the new tree is now 92 skills. The first tree was too short with 40 skills.

Now they should expand the Chinese, Korean, and Hindi trees.

And Ukrainian. And Italian. And...really so many of them could use some love.

And Hawaiian, especially.

And Navajo, don't forget that one.

that's great news, but just as a heads-up, the term jap is considered derogatory and an offensive ethnic slur in the US and japan: https://wikipedia.org/Jap#Japanese_ethnic_slur and https://wikipedia.org/Jap#Jewish_ethnic_slur

i'm not accusing you of anything, just letting you know.

**EDIT: thank you OP for updating the title! (thumbs-up emoji)**

Do all new accounts get the 2.0 tree? I got the 1.0 still when i tried with a new account...

May 15, 2019

https://www.duolingo.com/JpFan3

Try in the webrowser on incognito/private mode and it might also be good to use desktop mode on mobile, start the Japanese course without an account and just X the intro test. If you get the 2.0 tree, create a profile, if you don't close the window and try again.

https://www.duolingo.com/TENCHIJIN.

Yeah I think I had to give it about 7+ tries to get the new course. You have to be a true incognito ninja in order to get the Japanese course.

Btw you can just close the incognito/private mode tab and open a new one to see if you’ll get the new course. When you succeed, sign up and verify your account.

Having to reload it a bunch is probably ruining the stats they are tracking on the A/B test, since it will seem like there are a bunch of abandoned attempts on 1.0 tree, and I'm sure many people are just wanting to see the 2.0 tree themselves or just try a few skills/tests then wait for it to be merged.

But since Duolingo is designed with random A/B instead of opt-in, a bunch of bad numbers and noise in the stats is just the price that must be paid.

Thanks for the links.

For the second, the first boo-boo to strike me eye was under Home. https://duome.eu/tips/en/ja

The Verbs あります and います

• あります is used for inanimate objects, like books, rooms, televisions, and apples.

• います is used for animate objects, like people, cats, dogs, and other animals.

"Close, but no cigar."

あります has another usage.

Does the new skill tree teach more grammar rules?

May 15, 2019

https://www.duolingo.com/TENCHIJIN.

Certainly, but what rules? I’m not sure since I have not proceeded far yet. I thought of making a post of all grammar points the whole tree covers comparing it to the catalog of bunpro.jp and/or Tae Kim’s Guide to Japanese or Dictionary of Basic Japanese Grammar for example, but I’m not promising anything.

Meanwhile you can read the duome.eu grammar notes of the new course here https://duome.eu/tips/en/ja

I didn't bother to read the names of all the new skills in this image, but is there a holidays skill? There was supposed to be a National Holidays bonus skill alongside the Subculture and Olympics skills, but it was never added.

May 15, 2019

https://www.duolingo.com/JpFan3

I don't see it, and it isn't in the 1.0 tree. So either it was merged or spread about with another skill, dropped, or perhaps renamed. I do see an "Events" skill near the end of the 2.0 tree.

May 16, 2019

https://www.duolingo.com/Nanase-Miyuki

I do see an "Events" skill near the end of the 2.0 tree.

Possible that new skill has holidays in there. You wouldn't find out until you make it to the end of the tree, which will take a long time.

How much longer until this course is availible to everyone? I can't wait!!!

May 16, 2019

https://www.duolingo.com/UltimateGa447472

oh just a couple weeks? Seems pointless to create an entirely new account JUST to try a new tree tbh. Especially since I've made so much progress with the current one. Starting my progress over from the beginning would kill my motivation

May 17, 2019

https://www.duolingo.com/TENCHIJIN.

The A/B testing starts in a few weeks for the current users. It doesn’t 100% mean that the new course will be rolled out for you too. Worst case scenario, you’ll end up waiting 6-7 months.

May 17, 2019

https://www.duolingo.com/Hiro_04

Creating a new account seems like a hasssle since I also do another language. I'll just continue with the current tree and wait for the roll out to old users. Will probably be at the third checkpoint by that time

Bit of an odd question here: I just finished the second checkpoint. Problem is, according to this new tree there is a new lesson called Counting. Does this affect my future progress in any way?

anyways thanks for the info !

will our progress be reset?

May 15, 2019

https://www.duolingo.com/laszlopanaflex

when they rolled out the updates to the spanish trees, any progress you had on trees that were not complete yet were reset; and i think any completed tree that was updated with new content was also reset. all the other completed trees remained complete in your progress.

the update for japanese looks pretty big though, so i wouldn't be surprised if our progress was reduced drastically.

May 16, 2019

https://www.duolingo.com/egigi

What do you mean by a completed tree? Level 5 only? Or was it also reset to 0 if it was in level 3 for example?

May 16, 2019

https://www.duolingo.com/Usagiboy7

Just a note on the lost progress, it's a bit of a misnomer. If progress was a percentage bar that said you were 90% done with the available material, and they added more material, you wouldn't still be 90% done, because, with as much material there is now, you haven't completed 90% of it. It doesn't delete a person's actual progress, it adjust how that progress is reported, to account for more material. And, if someone was at XP Level 10, they are still at XP Level 10.

I suppose when I think about it, it depends on what people consider progress though. Personally, I consider progress to be how much material I've studied. And, that doesn't get erased. I just now have more material to learn from, which is a good thing in my mind. But, if people are gaming things, they focus on the 90% later saying 50% or something like that. So, ok, to some people it is lost progress towards a percentage, number, color, crown. It is all about priority I suppose.

May 17, 2019

https://www.duolingo.com/laszlopanaflex

completed as in level 5 (gold), but there's no telling if they'll roll it out the same way that they did with spanish - the lost progress caused a little bit of an uproar. either way, i'm scrambling a bit to get all my uncompleted lessons to level 5 just in case :)

May 17, 2019

I completed version 1 last month, so I guess I've been grandfathered (pun intended) out. Not to worry. I've got the much more difficult Mandarin and Korean to complete first.

May 27, 2019

https://www.duolingo.com/MaynardHogg

I soon gave in and last week tried the new skills at the end. I especially enjoyed the Olympics skill. Very topical. But no way (不行) am I going to visit Tokyo for the Olympics! Too hot, too crowded, too expensive.

June 14, 2019

https://www.duolingo.com/egigi

I also started Japanese two weeks ago. I am just over the second checkpoint now. If I need to make a new account, how can I switch to this new one without loosing my progress? Even if I do a placement test, I'll mostly get to level 1 in all the lessons already done.

May 15, 2019

https://www.duolingo.com/Treat666

Obviously this would not be possible ^_^

May 15, 2019

https://www.duolingo.com/egigi

I'll just stay with the old version. People say here the new one will also be added to the old accounts in some weeks. Since I am at about the third of the old version, I don't think I'll miss the new lessons before I eventually get access to them.

May 16, 2019

Was something changed in the practice algorithm in the standard Japanese tree? Yesterday and today, there are several noticeable differences in doing a normal timed practice of all skills than prior.

One example is that with vocab practice, it will bring up the 3 pictures with the characters, like it does when you are first learning a skill, rather than just the characters. Also, I noticed there are a lot more practice questions in each session about identifying / matching characters.

May 16, 2019

https://www.duolingo.com/SerenellaC7

it been doing this for me for the last week or so. before practice would ignore all golden skills, it now gives a lot of "easy" things like hiragana and simple terms from the first few skills and than a few phrases from closer to where i'm at. sometimes is good to get a throwback to older skill so you dont forget but i find the high number of matching questions too easy. Guess they are working on things and it will all be better once the new tree hits.

So, I literally just made another account with a separate email of mine (lol) and it still has the 40 courses. The tree doesn't change. .?

May 16, 2019

https://www.duolingo.com/TENCHIJIN.

Don’t register the account until you get the course. Use browser’s private mode / incognito mode and go to duolingo’s website, start the japanese course and do it as many times as it takes to get the new japanese course (just close the tab/window if you didn’t get it and try again), only then sign up / register the account.

May 16, 2019

https://www.duolingo.com/coffeehauss

Any approximate day for this coming to preexisting accounts? I heard "in the coming weeks", but that's a touch ambiguous.

May 16, 2019

https://www.duolingo.com/laszlopanaflex

i don't have any inside knowledge, but since the new trees are experimental i'm guessing the dates are approximate, because the launch isn't set in stone yet and/or because duo may also rollout the updates in phases to different sets of users.

the same thing happened with the new spanish trees - the rollout happened over a period of a few weeks and some people received the update before others but eventually everyone got them.
