This is not good English. During a match you could say 'The champion is not winning this match'. In the past: 'The champion did not win this match'.

It is a statement, regardless the moment of the statement, so it can be simple present. "I eat salad" can be in the same category? If I am in the process of eating it is incorrect and if it's ready then I already "ate" it. But still "I eat salad" is a valid sentence in English. At least I hope so.

Most people would say 'I am eating salad' while eating; or ''I eat salad every day'.

It sounds much better with present continuous.

A particular match is a unique event & result, whereas 'I eat salad' is a general statement.
