"Leader Boards" -- Opting Out

I'm here to learn and/or brush up on languages, not to compete with random strangers. How do I turn this nonsense off?

Yes, exactly. Goodbye to reminders of how ANYONE else is doing. It seems to work but so sad to lose contact with others we do respect and admire and trust to honestly share our learning progress.

I'd still like to follow along with my own personal friends. I just don't want the darned leader board positions and my name splashed for all to see. I'm not trying to compete. It's dumb that it's all or nothing.

I just don't want Duolingo to be constantly nagging me about the leaderboards. "You're about to drop out of the top ten!" OH NOES! WHAT SHALL I DO? CALL THE MARINES! CALL FEMA! "You have dropped out of the top ten!" Uh-oh. Is Duo going to come and arrest me now? Will my cat leave me? Will my cat leave me a dead mouse?

Would it be too much to ask to have a simple checkable profile option "Don't participate in leaderboards"? Give us a way to leave the leaderboard spaces for people who actually care about them.

Tape and paper over that part of the screen. BUT, what is really disturbing to me is that I can't prevent them from putting MY name and progress there publicly and forcibly, without my consent, enter me into their madness.

I believe that turning profiles to "private" only may work but then I will lose the contact with those I have come to know and admire here and of whose progress I WANT to be aware.

1) Cliche as it is, I'm not here to make friends. I am literally only here to learn languages, and the app shouldn't force me to compare myself to others. 2) Can't tape over the screen on mobile.

Then changing the privacy setting should help. Good luck!

Thankfully we can remove the Leagues panel (html/css code) with "uBlock Origin" as we are not allowed to opt-out ONLY from Leagues: https://forum.duolingo.com/comment/32303805

I explained it in more detail in this thread "You CAN (not) opt out (only) of leagues!": https://forum.duolingo.com/comment/32301709

I note that only the first of these works for the mobile app. There is still no way to stop the mobile app from nagging about leagues and leaderboards EXCEPT by withdrawing entirely from all public visibility.

Useful information for the web interface — but the web interface doesn't nag me about leaderboards in the first place.

You can’t, but you don’t have to use them.

Hi psionpete. I was given this route. Apologies if incorrect.

Psionpete. I discovered this when I tried to disable everything to get back to clubs. Good to see your great avatar here, as always.

It worked for me Linda - if I click on the shield now that used to be the League and Leader boards I get a message that says that my 'teacher has disabled Clubs'. Worked a treat. I agree though with an earlier post that said that positions in the 'League Tables' are still being posted without our permission. Such a pity to have to be involved and distracted when all we want to do is to learn a new language. Duolingo is so good it's such a shame that so many of us feel that the league is a bad thing. I definitely do.

Leaderboards are a nice way to help push people into languages and its exiting to advance to the next league. P.S. maybe those are the only 2 reasons they made it.
