How do I stay out of the new leagues?

I read somewhere that the leagues were optional. Is that true? I don't want to participate in this mindless competition for points that can be obtained by a number of ways that have nothing to do with learning. Yet, I don't find an option for turning them off and I'm afraid my primitive primate brain might get caught up in the trap Duolingo has set for him :S

Great information. Was at top of the Ruby league a few times and all I was doing was going through the practice time and again trying to get it to stick in brain. So easy to get caught up in it once you start taking notice of it.

Go into settings and turn off "public". Making your profile private will also erase all your ability to see other friends' scores and make it impossible for anyone to follow you or see your score. It's a very, very hard trade off but the only way to "opt out" at this point.

EDIT: For now, I can go in and change the setting back to public when I'm not on the learn site so can still find, follow and be followed by people. But no, there is no easy "opt out" available.
