In a sentence like this where it is unclear whether the aunt in question is on the paternal or maternal side, would both 'e'mam and me' be acceptable? Is there one form which is preferred as a sort of general case? I suppose this same question would apply to the two words for uncle as well.

The Klingons tend to be specific and I don't think any of the options can be considered a general non-specific option. But since this exercise does not specify and lacks context, we except all options: 'e'mam, me', 'e'mamnal, and me'nal.

There is not -- much like how in English there is no one word that covers "nephew" and "niece" together or "uncle" and "aunt" together, the way we have "parent" for "father or mother".
