Percentages Replacing Lesson Count!? NOOOOPPEE

I want to know exactly how many lessons I have left on a skill, not the percent completed. If i'm looking through my skills, 15/30 will come up the same as 5/10 now even though those are not even close in terms of remaining lessons. If I wanted to know the percent for some reason I could calculate that from the fraction but now I can't go the other direction.

Why do they do these things with no warning? Better than an A/B test would be hmmm.....poll the userbase and ask them what they think of a suggested update?

DL is starting to look like your favorite restaurant that got a new manager. You're a regular but they start changing all these things all of a sudden and you only go there now because its where you've always gone.

Couldn't have said that last paragraph better myself, havd a lingot!

Thanks! Thought though. I'm starting to think upvotes are more important than lingots. It doesn't cost anything and if you resonate with the content, it helps get it seen. Also that lingots are kinda useless.

I always do both. :)

I tend to use lingots as a way to show that I really liked a post, to underline it, in a sense. But it pretty much always comes with an upvote. I also find lingots usefull to show that something that has been downvoted for whatever nebulous reason actually was useful or valuable to me.

Finally, I use it when people who don't know better downvote the correct answer and upvotes an incorrect one (it happens sometimes, people just assume that the more upvoted answer is correct, and since there is no way to differ between a 'thanks' upvote and a 'you're right' upvote, language learners sometimes get the wrong idea).

After I read the title, I first clicked an upvote, and opened the topic after :D

Everybody: Go to Myra's post & vote down Myra, comment there how you don't like this new percentage system. Install adblocker & say you now use that until they reverse this, hit them where it hurts!

While I don't like the new percentages. I wouldn't want to attack DL like that. I mean they still are creating and supporting the platform for us to use. It's like biting the hand that feeds you

I agree. Duolingo is trying their best to keep it interesting. Let's show more appreciation for their work.

Really!! Hits them where it hurts. You are getting FREE education and you want to hurt Duolingo. Fortunately Duolingo doesn't have the privilege to ban you from their site. If you don't appreciate them and their efforts to keep the site interesting, get another one.

Duolingo is a company. They sell adspace. I, as a user of the language learning part, am a set of eyeballs that is only valued as they use me to get money from advertisers.

They are not trying their best to keep it interesting, they're trying their best to keep people addicted to this site to sell ads.

Not that long ago there was a thread about white-listing Duo & i was enthousiastic about this site, so i described how this site & some newspapers were the ones i had done that, because i do value this site.

I don't mind this. I know this. I also know my own value. If they mess with my learning like they are doing now, i will act to make my displeasure known to them.

I’d probably stop going all together if my favorite restaurant changed so many things so drastically like they did, and I didn’t like it. It’s a shame Duolingo has made so many people feel this way.

But I agree, I like knowing how many lessons I have left.

" You're a regular but they start changing all these things all of a sudden and you only go there now because its where you've always gone. "

And you also don't want to start elsewhere from the very beginning.

Have a Lingot from me too. The percentages have now been around for a little while. I got them three or four weeks ago, and made a thread vehemently denouncing them (which got over 700 upvotes and more than 300 comments, nearly all in agreement with my sentiments). But in spite of what I said, and the often equally vehement views of others who got the percentages at that earlier stage, Duolingo have taken absolutely no notice. :-(

Now it appears they're rolling out the percentage system to everybody else, hence their sticky post explaining it (although they talk about "progress" rather than specifically addressing percentages, but it's clear that's what they're really on about). Good times.

They are changing to a system where it's not X lessons to complete a course anymore. Depending on how well you do on a skill, or if you practice the skills words in another lesson, you get different percents. That wouldn't make sense with the old system.

Indeed. My engagement with duo is WAY down. Infact it is now nothing more than a five minute blast in my day before i move in to more productive less annoying things rather than the often hours long engagement with language learning it once was.

Funnily enough, i'm blasting through a lot of lessons. On android there still is a lesson count, so i'm taking as much advantage of that as i can before they change that one as well. Normally i hate doing my lessons in the app, i like being able to type & having more info that the webpage provides, but needs must. Hoping to finish my Spanish from German L1 tree before that happens.

It might have an unwanted side effect of showing up favourably in those terrible new leagues that i dislike as well, but one can't have everything...

Agree. I don't like this either. I like to do 5 lessons at a time and yesterday I had several lessons started.. all with multiples of 5. Now, I have no idea how many lessons are left in each one. Also I like to know how many lessons there are in each level before I start. Telling me I'm at 0% is not as good as knowing there are 40 in L4. Yesterday I had several lessons started and each of them

I don't get it. It seems like people care less about learning and more about completing an arbitrary number of lessons. Who cares if you've done 5 or 15 lessons? What matters is how much you've learned. The percentage system is more accurate in regards to your actual knowledge because it updates all lessons which have the words you are practicing simultaneously (read the stickied post if you don't know what I mean).

Because if I set a goal of doing 5 exercises in a day it is a lot easier to keep track of with fractions than percentages.

Also if a user is keen on completing a level to get to the next one and get a crown then a fraction '6/7' clearly shows how many more exercises you have to do i.e. 1. A percentage obfuscates this information as it could be 1 or 2 or more if the percentage was say 86%.

Anyway the percentages seem to add no value as when I monitor lessons completed on my tablet you still do all the lessons whatever the percentage says. That is the percentage might be 94% for a 5 lesson level but you still have to do the last lesson.

Unless you do your tree upside down i.e. get to gold (level 5) at the bottom before the top has gone blue (level 1) I don't see the point anyway!

Regarding percentages- I started a skill that had it at 29% complete, and when I started doing this skill-it now is at 0% complete. How does the percentages work or is this just something I need to ignore and just continue doing my skill -going from 0 level to 5 level to complete?

May 28, 2019

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Paul153436

Sounds like a bug going from 29% to 0% I think you need to report it on the Troubleshooting forum.

As for percentages see the post "Word-based Progress Update" https://forum.duolingo.com/comment/32313440 by Myra.

To answer your question, yes, just ignore your percentages and work down the tree cycling through the earlier levels as well to keep the repetition up. Personally I strive to open the whole tree up and then get it all blue then green then red then orange then gold! The top of my tree has become gold anyway as I repeat the easier exercises more quickly (I tend to do the top on days where I am tired or more rushed).

I agree !! Bring back the lesson count. The percentages do not motivate me at all, and they hide information. If I had done 10%, there is no way to tell if that means I have done 1 out of 10, 2 out of 20, or 10 out of 100 lessons. It makes a difference as to how I feel about my progress.
