Bonus XP System Changed?
Bonus XP is something I have been a fan of since it was introduced a month or so ago. The reason I like it is that it rewards good performance rather than punishing mistakes (Health system, I'm looking at you). We should have more reward-based changes rather than punishment/penalty-based ones.
However, there was a rather unjust aspect to the bonus XP. If you were doing a long skill and on a good streak of correct answers, but were then unlucky enough to get an answer wrong near the end, you would only get 1 bonus XP rather than the maximum 5 you appeared to be heading for. So all the good work you had done before would be undone by that one late error.
But today while doing some intensive work on the Danish tree, I noticed that in a skill with 18 lessons, I got 5 bonus XP despite slipping up on the last question. So I was awarded for getting 17 in a row right rather than effectively punished for that one mistake at the end. I have also got more bonus XP than I thought I would in several other Danish lessons too.
So it appears that Duolingo now awards bonus XP on the basis of your BEST streak in a lesson, rather than your MOST RECENT streak. In which case, THANK YOU, Duolingo! This is a change I can applaud. Credit where it's due. It is a change that has made my user experience better (as opposed to the abominable switch to percentages, which made it worse). It is now fairer than before, so good job on this one!
Have others also noticed this? Or is it only being rolled out slowly? Anyway, this is one change I actually appreciate. Change is a good thing when it improves the user experience rather than detracting from it! More of these types of changes, please, and less of the other annoying kind!
What gets my goat is that at least 1XP is seemgly awarded regards of performance. What kind of bonus is that?
That said I'd prefer to opt out of bonus XP
Each to their own.
They change this after one or two people complain, but they haven't done a thing about dark mode or percentage!
Yes, it seems to have recently changed for me too. And I'm glad! The previous calculation system seemed quite irrational but the new system makes much more sense. Thanks Duo!
But in the last few days, they have corrected this. It now correctly (IMHO) rewards for the longest streak in the exercise regardless of whether you missed something at the beginning or the end.
I think you're right about the change, Rowan, and I agree with everything you say. Mind you, at the moment it feels like we get some change, for better or worse, almost on a daily basis!
It is a new approach, I don't know. The system uses to reward less the mistakes done in the end of the exercise. If you are very bad you can take 11 XPs, if you are good and make some mistakes it is 12 and if you make some 14, but all these are dependent on the time you got the mistakes. For instance if your mistake is in the last question, it doesn't cost you anything, 15, as you have never done it. But there are some unfair parts in assessment. The system doesn't like strengthening exercises do you got just 10! Why? It is important to get exercises like these. Even though it is easy. Moreover: Difficult exercises with long phrases are not assessed more than easy ones. It is the same! So you can take a few strengthening exercises in early lessons without much effort to earn double or triple XPs than with one difficult one.
