Arabic Word of the Day 33#
*Hallo! Today we're going to look at sports:
*"Sports" in Arabic is 'Ariyaadha' - today's title ^ . Now you may have noticed that there's a "l" in the spelling but in the transcription I've written, there is no 'l'. The 'l' is silent here so don't pronounce it. OK Let's start! :
*كرة القدم = "Kurat alq^adam" = Football - So "kurat" means "ball" and "alqadam" means "the foot" so yeah, great imagination! Also, you may notice that although 'كرة ' ends in a silent "t", it is pronounced. This is because the next word starts with an 'a' so we can't say "kura alq^adam". So normally "ball" is pronounced "kura" not "kurat".
*كرة السلة = "Kurat as'sala" = Basketball - "as'sala" means 'basket'.
*كرة المضرب = "Kurat almadhrib" = Tennis - "almadhrib" means 'the racquet'
*كرة الطاولة = "Kurat at^aawila" = Table tennis - "at^aawila" means 'the table'
*كرة الطائرة = "Kurat at^aa'ira" = Volleyball - "at^aa'ira" means 'the plane'. You know... a plane flies and the ball flies over the net... Get the link?... nvm.
*كرة اليد = "Kurat alyad" = Handball - "alyad" means 'the hand'
*كرة الشبكة = "Kurat ash'abaka" = Netball - "Ash'abaka" means 'the net'
*الجمباز = "Aljimbaaz" = Gymnastics
*السباحة = "As'ibaah^a" = Swimming
*الجري = "Aljaree" = Running
*ركوب الخيل = "Rukoob alkhayl" = Horse - riding - "rukoob" means 'riding' and "alkhayl" means 'the horse'.
*الملاكمة = "Almulaakama" = Boxing - Technically means 'punching' (which is true, I personally think it's one of the stupidest sports but anyways...)
*المصارعة = "Almus^aara3a" = Wrestling - Came from the word "صراع" (s^iraa3) meaning, 'struggle' and 'conflict' (and I struggle to find the point of this so-called "sport")
*الهوكي = "Alhokee" = Hockey (just add 'al' before hockey and you're fine)
*الرماية = "Ar'imaaya" = Archery - Comes form the word 'رمي' (ramee) meaning 'to throw'.
*التزلج = "At'tazaluj" = Skating
*التزحلق = "At'tazah^luq^" = Skiing
*التزلج على الجليد = "At'tazaluj 3ala aljaleed" = Ice skating - We know "at'tazaluj" is 'skating' and "3ala" means 'on'. So "jaleed" means 'Ice', therefore it technically means "skating on ice".
*ركوب الأمواج = "Rukoob al'amwaaj" = Surfing - "Al'amwaaj" means 'the waves' so it technically means "riding the waves" which sounds cool
*OK I think that's enough [turns to blank-faced students]. I admit there is a lot of long, difficult ones in this list. Just make sure you remember the popular ones like 'football' and 'basketball' and you'll be fine.
*Now to say we play/do a sport, we say:
*ألعب = Al3ab = I play
*أمارس = Umaaris = I practice (I do)
*So any sports that involve a ball so any ball games, you use "al3ab". Any sports that don't, you use "umaaris".
So here's an example:
*ألعب كرة السلة = "Al3ab kurat as'sala" = I play basketball
*Thanks for Reading! Any Qs, Proof-reading, Suggestions, Possible Improvements, I'm here exercising my fingers on the forum! ;p Have a Nice Evening! ;D
Another great post!
Actually i got motivated to learn Japanese when i saw your profile!
Hehe in fact I haven't done Japanese for ages lol XD (mainly cus I couldn't manage two languages at once but you seem to manage 6!!) but I'm glad I motivated you so good luck! ;)
*ألعب = Al3abu = I play
the last U can change according to the verb position
ممكن يكون منصوب او مجزوم بالسكون
Any word else, the last vowel can change
Ooops I was trying to avoid adding "u" the whole time then I ended up doing so lol I'll change that right away. I didn't add it to "umaaris" so I don't know why I added it onto "Al3ab". ;p Thanks for noticing that mistake! Here some lingots!
Hola, you mentioned my favorite sport at’tazaluj also known as natación in Spanish!
What is your favorite sport? And what is probably the most popular sport in the Arab community?
I knew you were always the type of person who's so talented and special! @_@ My favourite sports are basketball and football and everyone plays them. Wait do you ice-skate? I could just imagine you playing the violin and ice-skating while singing in Spanish with your eyes closed XD
LOL...I can sing, yea. I think I should get a Grammy but everyone else think that I should go see a doctor.
Pfft same XD Actually I've never sang to know ;P my voice is horrible enough speaking let alone "singing" so I'm not gonna try... Unless I 'm on a desert on my one wearing 10 headphones
¡Ah cielos! I thought the word I wrote was swimming LOL, I can skate but it is painful to watch.
I'm not amazing at that sport ;p That's cus when I was in yr3/4 we had swimming lessons and the woman gave up on me and made me sit out every lesson instead of trying to teach me XD
agreed XD still don't know his age..... I started to think he is just 16 or 17 -
Ah lol I can imagine that! Have you guys actually ever ice skated? I've never but I can imagine myself skidding on my butt the whole way XD
No, I have never tried it, I don’t know if I will (I have tried regular skating but I am very sore for two days after)...Sometimes I can barely walk without walking into a corner or door. I have the gift to trip on air, (and sometimes fall because the floor needs a hug LOL.)
LOL I've never tried, I may do one day but I should be all alone, I'm shy enough to die if anybody watched me falling over and over again XD
Lol no I'd need someone to fall with me so I can laugh at them when they fail too XD Anyways my mum would never let me do that :(
