Random Japanese Fact of the Day Prt.14
In Japan, it's rude to eat or drink while walking. It’s pretty common to see someone eating a bag of chips or sipping coffee while walking down the street in Western countries, but this is not the case in Japan. While it isn’t considered quite as rude as it used to be, eating or drinking while walking is still looked upon as low-class behavior. When most Japanese people buy food or drink from a vending machine on the street, for example, they’ll consume the whole thing while standing beside the machine to avoid walking with it.
Not sure if this has already been said. But did you know is actually ILLEGAL to bring foreign walky-talkies into Japan? Thats because Japanese military and police use different frequencies than other countries, and these frequencies might not be restricted on foreign walkies...
That's actually something that's important to know if you ever want to be a tourist but something I'd never actually think about or realize.
When fast food first came to Japan, people were shocked that you would eat standing up, and the term 立ち食い (たちぐい) was coined.
Quite surprised at this the 1st time I noticed it and the Japanese students who stayed with us in the US were surprised as well AND didn't understand why there weren't more vending machines on the streets when "we" did eat and drink while walking.
That explains why they are always doing it in manga and anime! Always sort of noticed but never thought to really question it-thank you, these facts are so adorable lol
I think I've heard this fact somewhere, but I can't remember where. Interesting!
