Present perfect is a past tense. "Perfect" means completed but with the chance of it being done again in the present or future. We went to the opera. Once was enough. We have gone to Broadway shows many times and will again.
Yeah, I got tripped up by that too, but maybe it's a good thing to make sure you are actually reading/listening to the sentence rather than assuming a specific tense. The real world will not let you know in advance what tense someone might use.
