Lost my 147 day streak
It happened. I got home from work and forgot about Duolingo. I usually don't work sundays, but this time I did, and duolingo never even crossed my mind. I am pretty mad. I wanted to get to 200. I guess its just not meant to happen.
Anyhow, I now have lost streak syndrome.
Any ideas how to get rid of it?
You're 147 days smarter than you were 147 days ago. Now you have a goal to beat and I think that's pretty exciting!!
Congratulations !! You have been through the "cold turkey" method of treatment for streak addiction. All kidding aside, it is something to be proud of but is also becoming so frequently lost through glitches in the system it may be nice to actually know the reason yours was lost was not through someone else's error.
Did you have streak freeze enabled? If not, maybe it was deep down not that important ... OR had a hold on you that you didn't really want to continue in. Some say the "glitches" are an attempt to get people to buy PLUS for the streak repair. I have no idea but it is a possibility. Anything is possible with DL.
I am considering breaking my streak on purpose before I get to 100 and enter DL's (or at least duome's) radar system. I had a streak before and lost if through power outages, etc. It is actually kind of nice to have a reminder that there is life outside of DL that can take priority, since it is real and valuable.
I am sorry it happened but I also see a lot of people who seem almost possessed by these numbers and icons. They mean nothing in the real world...really.
I agree. We shouldn't get lost in this world of shiny red gems and green owls. It's nice to learn a new language, but we need to remember the world we live in.
I sympathise with your LSS. But knowing you, you will start again and soon get there. Dare I quietly mention "streak freeze"?
I had 200 day streak once, and for some reason I didn’t buy the streak freeze, so i lost my streak. I was so mad that I literally deactivated my own account and created a new one!
Good Luck Mate!
The cure for a Streak Freak is to answer this question: "One man is standing on the top of a mountain. He has no other mountains to jump to.
Another is standing at a crossroads. He cannot advance nor retreat, and he doesn’t know which road to take.
Of these two, who comes first and who comes after?
I thought I would end up doing it! But I didn't, anyhow, that doesn't help now.
@mwbrand1, yeah, I guess I am not that sad to see it go somewhat, I don't really know. I was getting really posessive of it. And it was kinda bogging me down, I'll try again!
I lost a 51 day streak due to time changes when traveling to Europe. I followed your advice to "try again" and before I knew it, my streak was restored.
I've found over the past two years there are some ups and downs to language learning. Sometimes I become discouraged, feeling like I have made so little progress, but at other times I'm thrilled when I discover I can apply some new aspect of my target language that I have never done before. It is during the down times when I have to think back to my original motivations for learning a new language. It's these original motivations that always carry me through, no matter what the negative circumstances or thoughts that are occurring.
My advice, focus on your original motivations for learning a new language and put whatever distracts you from those goals in the rear view mirror. Pat yourself on the back for making it this far. Most people drop out of language learning at about the 3 month mark.
I think streaks have been a good motivation for me to keep on track because I'm very undisciplined, I believe there's nothing wrong on pushing yourself a bit and be a little competitive, otherwise it would be easy to drop off any day that you feel too tired, too busy, or finding any other excuses that I always had...
I recently had a streak loss because I completely forgot! so I would recomend to set an alarm or a reminder on your phone at a time when you know you can actually take action, in my case is half an hour before the end time, because I'm not doing much, just getting ready to bed, just think what time works for you, for rxample, if you work in an office, maybe at luch time?.
Depending on your time zone, and when does your time end, you may still be able to repair your streak if you invite a friend to Duolingo, if they accept and register you will get a free week of Duolingo Plus and get your streak repaired automaticaly, I did that once and it worked!
If this doesn't work for you, chin up, set a new goal for yourself and go for it!
Thank you all so much! I guess the best thing to do is just to pick up and keep going and to heck with streaks. They don't show how much you have learned anyhow!
No fun. Bad enough having to work on a Sunday!
It happened to me at 1 day under a half year once (I still grit my teeth), and I stayed away from Duo for weeks. Maybe try this instead of that: Reduce your daily goal to 1 and just show up for awhile at Duo until you've gotten over losing the streak. And find a book to read in one of your languages, to fire up your enthusiasm again. Good luck!
When I go to visit my sons in another state I lose my streak. About once a year I have to start back at 1. Recently I took my computer with me on the 20 hour train ride. It was great! I was able to keep my streak going, so I'll do it again next time. No point in crying over spilled milk, right? So find a way to remind yourself to do the work, or accept that it's just time to start over.
Thank you for reminding me to go to the shop & see if my streak freeze is in place. Which is how i use LSS posts on the forum, i encourage others to do so as well, lessens any friction.
A while ago there was a post about this, including how you should check everyday if you've got your streak freeze in place, but i haven't been faithfully checking it everyday.
Other ways were things like minimise the amount of XP needed to maintain your streak. I want to aim for 200/250XP daily anyway & that isn't available, so setting it on 10XP wasn't a bother & then it's easy to quickly do one lesson to be done for those days when i don't feel like using Duo.
Anyway, i think you already know most of this, but it might help someone else. So for you, i'd pat you on the back for coming this far & like Theo said, treat it as a challenge to beat your old streak.
You will most likley bring it back up!! the most i've ever had was 16. lol. I forget to do duolingo on the weekends - no matter how many times I buy a streak freeze. Keep up the great work!
Yeah I lost my 26 day streak :( but I'm sure it's nothing compared to 147
I was pretty mad when I lost my streak after 1 day. I should be one more right now! I only missed it because my goal was 50 that day and I could only do like 1 lesson that day. I needed to do like 4.
Let me give you advice. Turn back your clock or a day. And do your target. But if that's over a couple days i never tried that.
I know i have privileges as a plus member, but sometimes when i'm very busy and i miss a couple days.
Since you only got 1 repair per week. Doesn't mean plus member is invincible.
I just lost my 9 day streak. Not super impressive, but it was my longest streak yet. I forgot to buy streak freeze. Don't worry, you aren't alone, everyone's streaks are going to break sometime...better sooner than later. Congrats by the way! Thats a really impressive streak for someone to hold!
Well, at least you didn't broke it because the app on your phone and the website don't synch properly. I'm having that problem. I have a Jolla Phone which only supports an older version, so half the times, I do my daily on the app and the website doesn't recognizes, or vice-versa. I just went from 50 lingots to 14 in less than a week trying to solve that mess :/
You've received great advice on how to proceed. I'm commenting to say thanks to those who suggested buying a streak freeze. I didn't realize I could do that. I had enough lingots to do so, so I did. Thanks!
I've just lost a streak of 339 days! I do my French lessons in the morning & make sure that the streak has been updated. And I usually check in the evening again & often do an extra lesson. So the next morning I open the Duo app and see a pop-up saying 339 day streak lost and to get it back pay $5.00. Why not be allowed to use lingots? Why not be penalised by a few days lost? Well, there is no way I am ever going to pay real money to get back a streak that was 'lost'. In fact I don't believe it was lost at all - taken would be a more apt description. Anyway, I don't care I will just write on a piece of paper 339 days and keep adding to it. If this is being done deliberately by an algorithm it will not win Duolingo any friends.
I lost my streak of 99. I know, crazy. The 100th day was a total blur for me and when I woke up in the morning I realized I had forgotten to screenshot my achievement. I raced to my laptop and realized I hadn't even done my 100th day. My advice is to cry in a blanket -- or get streak freeze.
Making it 147 days is tough. I've barely made it here, because I've almost forget so many times. Now you have a personal record to beat!
Have you ever tried the Duolingo Plus free one week trial? If you haven't, you can get it for free and you can repair your lost streak for free once a month.
For me, a streak always felt like an indication of my progress (although I know that's not necessarily the case) so some irrational part of me raged at my loss of 'progress' when I broke a streak.
Lately I've started using different resources to supplement my studying; textbooks, ankidroid or flashcards as well as taking actual notes from the hints and tips before each Duolingo lesson on the desktop site. Now I feel less like Duo is an indication of my progress and more of a supplement to my learning, so it doesn't bother me as much when I break my streak :)
Of course, I still try to do it each day, but it's nothing major if I accidentally skip a day either
I intentionally let me streak slip at 100 - a nice even number - just so I wouldn't get so beholden to it. I'm now on day 13 of a new streak, and I'm not sure where i'll let it slip ... 200 maybe? But I agree with those who say that DL should be about the learning rather than the duration. As long as you know you're a devoted user, it doesn't matter if the world does.
